Wayne Rooney has pleaded with Alex Ferguson to let him play in tomorrow's Carling Cup tie with Coventry at Old Trafford. Under normal circumstances, Rooney would be excused involvement as Ferguson takes the opportunity to give him less experienced players some exposure at senior level. However, two games into his comeback from a broken foot, Rooney is desperate to face Iain Dowie's men — and has even laid claim to the captain's armband. "Wayne Rooney's been in my ear wanting to play," Ferguson said. "He wants to play, he wants to be the captain, he wants to take the penalties, the corners, the free-kicks, the goal-kicks, the lot." Rooney is likely to get his wish, even if it is just to get Ferguson a bit of peace. The England striker will be joined by fellow first-team stars Anderson and Nani and, possibly, John O'Shea, who has missed three games after injuring his knee on Republic of Ireland duty in the Czech Republic a fortnight ago. Tellingly though, Owen Hargreaves was not among a list of players Ferguson confirmed will be involved, a firm indication the England man is still to recover from a thigh injury suffered in training with the national team three weeks ago. "There is a real buzz about the place and we are really looking forward to it," said Ferguson. "It will be a fantastic atmosphere and I am sure Coventry will have a real go. "From what I am led to believe, Coventry are bringing over 10,000 fans with them. "They were one of the longest-serving top-flight clubs at one point but they have been out of the Premier League now, which probably explains the attraction. It should be a real cup tie." It's great to hear he's optimistic! I really hope he plays against Coventry, it would onlydo him good, help him get back in top form.

Kuszczak
Brown - Piqué - J Evans - O'Shea
Nani - Carrick - Hargreaves - Eagles
Rooney - Saha That's what side I'd play. O'Shea, Hargreaves, Rooney and Saha need match fitness so I'd start them with that group of youngsters included. This side would beat Coventry, no problems. Looks good Adam, if I were a gambling man I'd bet this is going to be the starting 11 though seeing Anderson would be good, he needs the experience. Rooney will be itching to play but I wonder if Fergie will start Tevez and Saha to experiment with those two again. ------------------------------------------ Its fair to say that alot of top clubs don't take it seriously but I think its a perfect competition to try and bring your younger players on. I don't expect to see any big names against coventary but I would like to see Nani, anderson get a run out. I think the way Arsenal used the competition last year is the best way of going about it. -------------------------------------------- I'd go along with that side Adam, although i would quite like to see Anderson given another outing instead of Carrick. No doubt that side would be well equipped to beat Coventry though. -------------------------------------------- the carling cup is great for the younger players to get some crucial experience at the top level which will bode well for them in the future. Strong side adam picked there.. which is more than capable of beating coventry. would be good for rooney to get more games under his belt as he doesnt look fully match fit and sharp yet! --------------------------------------------- I'd swap Carrick for Anderson on your team there Adam. I want to see more of him cos so far he's had no chance to shine. Other than that your team is what I would expect. Hopefully Louis can get through a full 90 minutes. Actually id have Bardsley at right back. Nani on the left. Eagles on the right of course.

Well I heard Hargreaves still not recovered yet so probably he wont play. I can imagine the likes of Rio, Vidic, Scholes, Giggs and a few others rested. That said I would probably play O'Shea as right back and Pique to partner Wes in the centre of defence with the brilliant Jonny Evans as left back.
I would use Frazier Campbell to start with Rooney up front with a midfield of Nani, Eagles, Anderson, and maybe Carrick.

I've looked everywhere for a link to watch the match. Found something which looks promising, but it didn't actually have the United game on even though it advertised it.

Not a very inspiring Carling Cup match and I'm a bit disappointed we couldn't get the win against Coventry City while every other team got results.

I don't think the team was good enough to win, Fergie got it all wrong. Dong is just hopeless, and I don't think Anderson is a foward.

I actually think the team selection wasn't that bad enough , the team Fergie set out to play should have won the match fair and square. The players let themselves and the crowd down.

Well I don't think the team was strong enough. I mean look at the midfield and strikers. The midfield had three wingers and a centre back in it. What the fuck is that about? And the two fowards were Anderson, who is settling in still and I don't think he's a striker, and Dong, who we all know is a shirt-seller and is absolutely useless on the pitch. So I don't think the team was strong enough to win to be honest.
