Why do people insist on posting that he failed at Barca??? he didn't fail at Barca, he was surplus to requirements as he was played on the left side of midfield WHEN HE CLEARLY plays central and some buck toothed Brazilian arrived and took his place. Call it failure if you wish but he was first choice for BARCELONA in a position that wasn't his 1st choice. Riquelme non! I' ve seen like 6 other players listed in this thread who I'd rather have! This guy has Kevin Phillips syndrome, mark my words. He's 28, and in his 10 years (roughly) as a professional footballer he's had one good season, now if he was 20 and had one good season everyone would be saying "oh no I dunno he's only had one good season" He didn't make it at Barca, he was shipped off to a team that signed Diego Forlan for gods sake and brought them to the champions league, it was through sheer defensive grit and good fortune in the draw that Villareal made it as far as they did, Riquelme is over-rated to the hilt, he's the current flavour of the month and we never buy those. I did think this at first but then realised how about watching him in the world cup first with the big players on the big stage against different styles of football... probably what United are also doing.

Thats a very narrow view, the barcelona team the year Riquelme was playing central midfield won how many tropheys? I'm not even sure they qualified for the champions league during this time. This was just before Joan Laporta took over and turned barcelona around but moving out players who he didn't consider good enough for barcelona and bringing in players who were.
You're looking at this through incredibly rose tinted glasses.
p.s. congrats on 300 posts ;D

Cheers fella, Being shipped out for the arrival of Ronaldinho is no disgrace and doesn't convince me he was failure. How many Trophies did Shearer win in his Career? Doesn't mean HE was a failure, simply the shite around him didn't do the Business. I watched the first game he played for the Argies against his replacement the buck toothed one and he BLITZED Brazil and Ronny, Ive heard suggestions that the guy can't tackle or track back, well let me tell you when it's as important as making a point the guy can tackle alright. People reckon he ran the show against England in that friendly well against Brazil he was twice as good as he was against England if you can imagine Thats a very narrow view, the barcelona team the year Riquelme was playing central midfield won how many tropheys? lets just sign the lad up out of all our midfield targets he is one of my favorites. as has been said before great going forward and when he needs to track back he will and is completely capable of putting in a tackle or two

Riquelme is 4 years younger than Scholes, he is 27 and is 28 in late june. We have already signed him with a verbal agreement and so to Cambiasso and Torres is very close to signing too however nothing will be done untill after the world cup.

Is the 8 million minimum release clause the exact amount? Because if it is, I think he would be a damn good signing and I don't think he'll be like Veron cause he has far better upper body strength compared to the pussy Veron.

No need for him to tackle if United are going back to the 4-3-3 tactic with two defensive midfielders helping the defence, and hence, allowing Rooney, Ronaldo, Our Striker whoever it may be, and Riquleme to destroy sides. We will be lethal.

Going back to 4-3-3 god i hope not, think there would be big falling out's should that happen after how it went last time, having said that it could work with different presonel.

Yeah and it rarely actually worked out as 4-3-3, like when we tried it more often than not it was 4-5-1 and the worst football i've seen at united.

I think the decision on signing Riquelmé will ultimately come down to the decision on Ruud. If we keep Ruud, I think we will sign Riquelmé because that's the kind of player we need to provide Ruud, something he has been missing since the departure of Becks. If we release Ruud, then we'll get another type of player because it will seem Fergie is trying to change the style of play at United where more than one player gets the goals.

Yeah were not Chavs or Barca playing 4-3-3 Thats the 4-3-3 formation that has just won the Premiership and the CL respectively. 4-4-2 won the Carling cup I know we never looked good with 4-3-3 but we must be able to adapt to that formation when neccessary, we can't just compete with one dimensional football, maybe the new personell will help us adapt 4-4-2...fuck 4-3-3...were not Chelsea or Barca...

Wow thats a silly thing to say, you want us to buy someone so we can try to copy the way another club play? how stupid! We are United, not Barca, NOT Chelsea. We play our way and have won with it in the past, won with it this season and also lost with 4-3-3 this season. 4-3-3 is tried, tested and failed. 4-4-2 is tried, tested and succeeded at the highest level. There are too many suggestions of 4-3-3, go back to 606 to make silly suggestions then come back when serious
