The first official Coordination Group meeting for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo (NOR) since the appointment of Åsne Havnelid as the new Chief Executive Officer of the organizing committee, also known as VM 2011 AS, took place this week Tuesday in Oslo. Since starting on 1st September, she has been joined by Adelheid Sæther as Chief Operations Officer and Chief Financial Officer Stein Opsal, and the three person team has began earnest work to prepare the championships.
One of the key topics on the agenda was the plans for the new Holmenkollen. Prior to the election, the Oslo City Parliament had decided that the old jumping hill at Holmenkollen will be replaced by a new and modern ski jump that meets the requirements of the future on time by the FIS World Ski Championships 2011. The winners of the international design competition were selected this summer, but the construction of the new jump has yet to start, with the City Council and Parliament reviewing the project in more detail, especially the costs involved.
_________________________________________________ The Autumn Coordination Group meeting for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) was held this Monday. Led by President of the German Ski Association Alfons Hörmann and Managing Director Peter Fischer, the Organizing Committee provided a very detailed update on its progress in all aspects of the preparations to the Coordination Group members led by FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis and Ingolfur Hannesson, Senior Winter Sports Manager of the marketing and TV rights holder European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Work on the Kandahar course has been underway since early October with a special focus on widening the so-called FIS Schneise (“FIS Corridor”). This first phase of the work will complete in November. Preparations for the men’s Audi FIS World Cup slalom race in February are well underway. The organizing team also presented a very advanced status of team accommodation plans, where contractual agreements with the participating hotels are already in place, and a comprehensive chart of its own internal organization. Several of the key positions are already staffed with an optimal mix of experienced experts and young newcomers who have exchanged their active racing careers for the organizational side. Of note is the appointment of Stefan Stankalla who has a particularly heavy desk as both chief of race and also heading marketing projects.
The organizers have also launched a new Internet presence at www.gap2011.com where more detailed information and updates can be found. The site is currently in German but an English version will follow shortly. _________________________________________________

Finland with 1-2-3 in Stockholm big air
Finnish riders dominated the second big air contest in the 2007/2008 NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup held in the Swedish capital Saturday night. The hero of the hour was 21-year-old Janne Korpi who – with a Cab 10 Nosegrab – relegated Risto Mattila to the second spot. It was Korpi's third FIS World Cup victory, and the second in big air. With his victory he also claimed the big air World Cup lead from his countryman Peetu Piiroinen. Sami Saarenpaa completed Finland's total podium sweep by beating Slovenia's Domen Bizjak in the small final.
A total of 63 riders from 14 nations participated in the second big air contest staged in the Stockholm Olympic stadium, the venue for the 1914 Olympic Summer Games.
Korpi was surprised about his victory in the super final: “I was not doing so well during the qualification. But I changed my board for the k.o.-heats and it was getting better and better each round. I'm super stoked.”

I used to snowboard, I'm thinking of starting up again. But for me the only thing that comes out of winter is indoor footy, which I must say is a lot of fun, like street footy with no out of bounds, just walls to get checked into or check someone into. Such good times.

Alpine skiing World Cup champion Aksel Lund Svindal crashed during the first downhill practice and was transported to hospital.
According to the Norway team doctor, Svindal suffered a deep gash in his left leg that required 13 stitches and lost several teeth in the crash that occurred coming off the final jump into the finish area on the Birds of Prey course.
The Norwegian all-rounder escaped the spill with no suspected broken bones but may not be fit to race in Beaver Creek which will stage a downhill, Super G, giant slalom and combined events starting on Thursday.
Svindal had been in superb early season form with two wins in four races, including a Super G victory at Lake Louise on Sunday.
He also won the season-opening giant slalom to easily go top of the overall standings 234 points ahead of Austria's Benjamin Raich in second on 166.

Italian giant slalom specialist Massimiliano Blardone won the fourth World Cup race of his career after narrowly beating compatriot Manfred Moelgg.
Blardone, whose 13 World Cup podiums have all come in giant slalom, set a combined time of 2:10.75, edging out Moelgg by 0.09 seconds.
American Ted Ligety climbed from sixth place in the first run to finish third, 0.17 seconds behind Blardone, and maintain his position at the top of the giant slalom standings.
Frenchman Thomas Fanara had looked on course for a maiden World Cup win after leading at the halfway stage but crashed out barely a dozen gates into his second run.
"I got the win today that I was aiming for in Beaver Creek," said Blardone who was second fastest in the opening run of last week's giant slalom in the Colorado resort, before dropping down to fifth place.
"The conditions were extremely demanding today with a really icy first run and then a very choppy second run, so I just took every chance I had and skied at my limits."
There was disappointment for the home nation with the usually dominant Austrian team failing to make the podium.
Former overall World Cup champion Benjamin Raich was the best-placed of the local skiers, finishing fourth -- just 0.03 seconds behind Ligety.
"I really went for it in the second run, because I probably didn't risk enough in the first," Raich told Austrian television. "That probably made the difference between making the podium and finishing fourth."
In-form Swiss Daniel Albrecht followed up on his first two World Cup victories in Beaver Creek with a fifth place finish on Saturday.
The result leaves Albrecht on top of the overall standings with 317 points, but just 12 points clear of second-placed Raich.

FIS sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Reinhard Hess, the former coach of the German Ski Jumping national team. Mr Hess died of pancreas cancer on 24th December at a clinic in Bad Bebra (GER). He was 62.
Considered as the most successful German Ski Jumping coach ever, Heß led such stars as Jens Wessflog, Dieter Thoma, Martin Schmitt Sven Hannawald to their big triumphs. During the period of Reihard Hess, from from 1994 – 2003, the German team collected 21 medals at FIS World Ski Championships or Olympic Winter Games. A native of Thüringen, Hess became not only appreciated as a top coach but also as a human person who was a father-like figure for the athletes on the team.

The 2007/08 Jack Wolfskin Four-Hills-Tournament will start on 30th December, 2007, in Oberstdorf (GER), followed by the traditional New Year’s Ski Jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) on New Year’s Day. The new Olympic Hill in Partenkirchen (GER) was inaugurated last Friday, 21st December, during the FIS Continental Cup competitions there and this year’s Tournament competition will be the first World Cup competition on the new hill. The Austrian competitions in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen on 4th and 6th January, 2008, respectively, will conclude the 56th edition of the traditional competition series.
As usual, the Tournament will be organized using the Knock-Out system. In the qualification round, the athletes fight for start positions in the first round. Then the first round is contested by 25 pairs of jumpers. Only the 25 winners and 5 of the losers as the so-called lucky losers will reach the final round.
The dominance of the Austrian eagles has been impressive during the early season. Last year’s Tournament winner Anders Jacobsen, along with the entire Norwegian team, are poised for a challenge, however, and one should not forget the veterans Adam Malysz (POL) or Janne Ahonen (FIN), currently 6th in the overall World Cup rankings, let alone the Swiss duo of Andreas Kuettel and Simon Ammann. There are also several young talents ready for exploits so excitement and adrenaline can be guaranteed!

More than 10’000 spectators attended the premiere of the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital last Saturday. Stefan Gimpl of Austria dominated the competition, winning the third of six big airs this season. In the super final, the 28-year-old out-performed the World Cup leader Janne Korpi (FIN) and celebrated his first triumph this season. Korpi, the winner of the last competition in Stockholm, opened with a “Cab 10”. Gimpl responded with the same trick and a better landing, earning just one point off the best possible score of 30 points. In the Slovenian battle for third, Matevz Petek beat his countryman Domen Bizjak.
The next big air will be held on Gimp’s home turf in Graz, Austria, on January 5th, 2008.

Morgenstern’s series ends
In the e.on Ruhrgas FIS World Cup Ski Jumping event in Engelberg (SUI) on Sunday, Andreas Kuettel (SUI) managed what no one had yet achieved this season: win a World Cup competition in front of Thomas Morgenstern! On Saturday, the Austrian had equaled the record of six victories in a row held by the Finns Janne Ahonen and Matti Hautamaeki, and set a new record for the most victories in a row in the beginning of a season. On Sunday, Andreas Kuettel made history in becoming the first Swiss jumper to win on the Titlis hill in Engelberg at the 34th competition held there since 1980. And it was the first top finish under the guidance of the new Swiss Head Coach, Werner Schuster, who took over the team for this season.
Austria may not have collected both of the victories last weekend but its dominance on the hill was again remarkable: on both days, there were four Austrians in the top five. On Saturday, it was only Tom Hilde of Norway who managed to break the red-white-red lines. On Sunday, Andreas Kofler who led after the first round fell at the end of his 139-meter leap, the longest in the second round, and dropped to 5th.
In the overall FIS World Cup rankings, Morgenstern now leads with 660 points (of maximum of 700) ahead of three of his teammates. The best non-Austrian is Tom Hilde in 5th.

No glory for Janne today ; After a very good jump in the first round of the 4 Hills tournament in Garmisch Janne failed to win and came second after that Gregor Schlierenzauer found a 141 meters jump who saw Janne achive only the second place.
Im pretty impressed but Neumayer who found himself again after spending last year out cos of injury now he's back on track in a very good shape and now is the key man for the German team.
Still without victory is Norway who saw is dream to reach the podium with De Wilde Hilde not coming true; After a good jump in the first round (133 meters) Hilde only jumped 128.5 meters in the second round finishing only 8th.
I hope in better luck for the Norwegian team in Innsbruck.
So today's podium is :
Schlierenzauer
Ahonen
Neumayer
