Dire Straits. Beatles don't even come into it, so much faff in amongst good stuff. Ah come on. Of course The Beatles are contenders.

"Best" is so subjective isn't it.
Is it most successful? Most influential? Most Innovative? Most genre spanning? Most famous? Just purely personal taste? Or a combination of these?
The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, T Rex, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Bowie (not a band but you know), Queen, The Smiths, New Order, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur.
I'd find it very difficult to highlight who was the "Best" amongst them, I love all their music.

The answer is Dire Straits. Knopfler, is a friggin' genius on all levels.

The answer is the Beatles.
Or if I want to say something original, Elbow.

Hard to say.
Pink Floyd, The Smiths & Dire Straits are all right up there.

The Beatles are hippy-trippy horse manure for at least 50% of their back catalogue.
Plus, they pinched (as Scousers are so prone to do) Let It Be from Arethra Franklin. Paul McCartney wrote it for her, then took it back so The Beatles could do it instead.
And also, John Lennon is just annonying.

Lennon was a pretentious self indulgent sexually confused individual. A lot of the early Beatles stuff was nothing but plagiarized rehashed American rock 'n' roll, which the vast majority of the European public had little or no knowledge of, thus making what they did look "original".
In a nutshell, they were first to exploit such a market which ultimately propelled them onto the world stage, like no other band had ever been.
A lot of the Beatles stuff was good and very listenable. A lot of it was just space filling tripe. To coin a Mozza line, their music..."It says nothing to me about my life"
Troo dat!

Artic Monkeys? Beatles will always be legendary. Since they hooked up with Josh homme from queens of the stoneage their music has come on leaps and bounds. AM is a top album. Also suck it and see is a good one. Oh and by the way you're all sacked no mention of The police. I went to see them in 2008 and they kicked ass, one of The tightest bands I've had the pleasure of seeing live. Stopped listening to them. Thought they went downhill fast after whatever you say I am. That was in my cd player for months straight. I like are you mine though so I might have to give them another shot. I think this thread shows that British music has been in the wilderness 20+ years.

How so?
Just because we haven't had 'The Best Ever' in that time doesn't mean there ahsn't been some superb music produced in the last twenty years.
Biffy Clyro, for example. But I wouldn't have them in the different stratosphere of the likes of Dire Straits. They're still a great rock band.
