inspired by some of tommos tweets recently i wanna talk about metallica.
first off - load, re-load and st anger are good albums. not if you compare them to certainly the first four, and also the fifth, but if you take them as they are, accept that the guys had taken the thrash and metal genre as far as they could to that point (and better than everyone else) they are good albums. yeah, st anger sounds like it was recorded in someones garage. so what. watch 'some kind of monster' on dvd and the album means a bit more.
admittedly if i was a teenager in the 80's from the bay area i might have abandoned ship by the time of the black album, but seriously some of these kids accused metallica of selling out with ride the fucking lightning because of 'fade to black'.
but yeah, the first four albums are my favs, ride and ...and justice probably edge out kill em and puppets by the width of a rizla paper for me, depends what mood i'm in though. 95% of the time i have a guitar in my hands it's a tallica riff i'm playing. watching them play through the puppets set at download 06 was a special night.
i listened to death magnetic a lot at the time it came out but not so much since, and i've not heard the stuff they've done with lou reed to be honest.

If it's not discussing the new PBTT or the American Nightmare reunion I'm not too fussed.
In any case:
GWAR tour cancelled as the guitarist died this morning.

I listen to a lot of Metal and things that I consider metal but some people don't consider metal. My three favorite bands at the moment are Between the Buried and Me, Born of Osiris, and A Hero a Fake. Great bands, if you haven't listened to Born of Osiris I suggest you do, their drummer may be the best around.

Lol Jim, I love how your reply to me saying Death Magnetic was good was simply "Judas Kiss". Have to admit I never listen to that.

This week I'm being taken to see Opeth with support from Pain of Salvation. I've seen Opeth twice before and I'm not really a fan of PoS but it should be decent. I'm not really that into Opeth (or much Metal in general) anymore but it was a birthday present so I couldn't exactly say "no".
I do still listen to the odd bit of Metal, stuff like Deathspell Omega, Agalloch and Wolves in the Throne Room. Also a bit of Hardcore/Metal from Converge, Botch, Cursed and Pelican. However I've largely gone off most of it as my tastes have changed over the years.
As for the post about Metallica, I've always thought their material after the black album was utter wank, and the black album was pushing it for me. Then again my favourite album of theirs was always Kill 'Em All. That's not being being elitist though, that's just personal taste.
