This is the point though. What Evra has said makes it fully understandable that we chased Baines. If Evra told the club he wasn't signing a new deal then we need to replace him and could have spent this year ushering him gently out. There's no way someone like Paddy has said this to the media without telling the club months ago. Makes sense to me. I can't see his personal reasons having anything to do with us flirting with Baines this summer. He probably just fancies seeing out his last couple of years back in sunny Monaco. Yeah, the rumors of his missus wanting to go back started a year of 2 ago. In fairness you wouldn't deny him a move back to Monaco, the guys been incredible for us. If I'm right, the rumours of his bird wanting to go back started not long after that story about him having an affair with a student or something. You're right though. I don't think we can begrudge him a move home after the success he's helped to bring us. He was part of one of our best back-lines ever. And he'd be leaving during his downturn as opposed to at his peak so it wouldn't be a massive blow really.

Oh hey look - another media contradiction / misunderstanding. (from daily mail)
Manchester United's Patrice Evra says he may stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season
Reports from France said player wanted to leave for personal reasons, but left-back says it was a "misunderstanding"
Patrice Evra says he has not ruled out staying at Manchester United beyond the end of this season.
Evra appeared to be ready to leave United at the end of this season after claiming "personal" reasons meant he was unlikely to stay.
But the France international, 32, claimed he is willing to sit down and discuss a new one-year contract extension with United.
"I had a French interview and I said 'It's personal' meaning 'I don't want to talk about it'," said Evra.
"And then they say 'I will leave'. Maybe some people [outside] want me to leave the club but that's not the case.
"I will answer if somebody wants to talk about my contract because I think it ends after this year.
"But then they have to talk with Manchester United and my agent. Me? I love this club so much.
"The only thing I can say is it [the French interview] was a big misunderstanding."
Despite Evra's claim, it is understood that United are prepared for the left-back to leave at the end of this season.
United boss David Moyes tried to sign Everton's Leighton Baines this summer and also failed with a loan move for Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao.

Hmm is right.
No matter when he leaves I think Patrice will go down as a great servant to the club even with his recent decline in form.
His friendship with Ji Sung Park always made me chuckle they seemed to be always enjoying themselves.

Love Pat but it's time for him to give that position to someone else, excluding Butt Ner or Fabio who seems frustrated. We need to buy quality LB and Baines isn't one them, we need world class, just as Evra was few years back, before World Cup.

Put Fabio at LB and purchase a new LB backup. Play Self-Proclaimed-Winger Evra or Better-Offensively-than-Defensive Buttner on the wings instead of Valencia or Young - Shift Januzaj to RW. Guaranteed improvement on crossing, chasing down, successful tackles up the pitch, opportunities created and therefore, goals.

Agree mate, but alas, wishfull thinking, would love same to happen, but under our current managment can't see it at all.

He's went over the edge in the last two season and should be sidelined. I don't care what people say about Buttner but he is a modern fullback, its not just there job to defend now, they need capabilities on the ball also and buttner can cross a ball and he has the right attitude to make it. He's young and inexperienced but half a season of first team football will make a huge difference to him. He's not a natural defender but how many of the top fullbacks in world football are?. Fabio is an odd one but he's clearly frustrated by his lack of chances, he went to QPR and it didn't work out for him, so he hasn't had any positive experiences in first team football yet and he needs that. I recommend a good loan move for him and go with buttner and rafeal for the remainder of the season. We do not need to waste 30 million of a fullback. Midfield should be the priority.

Is Buttner any different to Sergio Ramos or Luiz? No. if we were a better team he'd be wicked for us.

Modern fullbacks aren't as defensive-minded as they used to be but Buttner is THE worst defender i have ever seen at Utd. And I've seen a lot of them.

He makes Buttner look like Paul Mcgrath.
