I think if Baines is Moyes first signing we need another one following soon after. A lot of fans will be disappointed. Isn't Varela Moyes' first signing? Will you be disappointed though? TBH, I think Baines would be a good signing. But where would that leave Buttner, Evra and Fabio (even though some might say he isn't a left back)?

Not disappointed if we are going to do further business, but what I mean is, there's all this talk of big names like Thiago, Cesc, Modric, Bale etc, and then we sign a full back from Moyes former club who we don't really need.
It will give more ammunition to those already saying Moyes is out of his depth.
Obviously I don't agree with it, but I do think Moyes needs a statement signing to show we are still a draw and that he can attract top players.

I was chatting with a friend today, and we jest that when at Everton, Moyes had no money to chuck around. Now at United, he will THINK that all he has to do is chuck money and players would come - alas, all he will find is that he will not have ENOUGH money. Haha. I understand what you mean, but I think Moyes doesn't need to improve the squad just yet. First season off the bat I expect him to be surveying the team. It's barely a month and he hasn't had much time with the squad to know who can do what and who requires "replacing". I rather have a manager like him than a manager who comes in and tears the squad apart - spend spend spend, and leaves us in tatters when the team doesn't gel. Ala all Shiteh managers, or QPR off the top of my head. I trust Woodward's trying his best to obtain a player here or there - but if we don't, I wouldn't despair quite yet. But unlike most fans, I don't really expect us to win anything (but we must try in all) this coming season.

Yeah but you're using a straw man there. Just because I think he needs to improve the squad doesn't mean I think he should be throwing cash around with reckless abandon and tearing apart a title winning team.
There are obvious additions which need to be made to the squad to enable us to retain our place at the top of the English game and mount a renewed challenge in Europe. Whether the manager has been there 27 years or a month, this is the case.

I was just opining on how I'm glad Moyes is taking his time instead of getting, say, Hughes (not an attack, but he has that inclination) in and tearing the team apart immediately. We meet eye to eye on that point I guess I'm more inclined to wait and see what Moyes and the team has in store "for us". I wouldn't say our team is perfect as it is far from - but I do think we have a team capable to retain or fight for the top of the PL.

I honestly don't care who we sign i just want the transfer window to close so i can actually enjoy football again. Always thought United had a great fanbase but since reading forums i think we are only slightly better than Liverpool fans & probably only because we are winning. If we went two seasons without winning anything everyone at the club would be sacked from our legendary players to our tea lady. I think we could implode if we stopped winning.

In breaking news a magnitude 8.5 earthquake was recorded in Wales this afternoon, destroying homes in a 50 mile radius and killing an estimated 10,000 people. The scene is said to be "cataclysmic".
Experts have agreed that the source of the earthquake was Paul reading the above comment regarding Man United fans as being only slightly better than Liverpool fans. Scientist believe that it is only a matter of time before Paul mutates into a 100 foot tall "Godzilla" like monster capable of indescribable destruction if more comments comparing United fans to Liverpool fans are heard, and that bringing Mothra out of retirement could be the only answer to stop the rampaging beast.

Yes, just the position we need. The 3 left backs we currently have aren't enough
Brilliant.

As much as I like Baines, he'd only slightly improve us, and we have cover for Evra with Fabio, and even Blackett and Evans if Buttner leaves.
People may say that Fellaini would only slightly improve us too, but I'd say he'd only slightly improve our strongest 11, he'd significantly improve the squad and give us vital other options. Baines really doesn't. He just makes us that little bit better, whilst almost certainly pissing off a major first team player (really can't see Evra being happy suddenly sitting on the bench, especially in a world cup season.)
Edit:
I know Baines would significantly improve the squad too, having Baines and Evra as options is clearly better than having Evra and Buttner, but you can only play one left back, you can play 2 or 3 centre midfielders at a time. So it's a lot more likely that a full back losing his place will grow restless than it is a centre mid dropping out, there's still countless games they can come in and play.

Latest is that we're supposedly signing Baines for 15 million in January.
Seen a couple more references to it tonight, no idea if there's any truth to it or not, so make of it what you will.

Saw that too. Why would they sell for 16 in Jan when they turned down around the same in the summer?

Saw that too. Why would they sell for 16 in Jan when they turned down around the same in the summer? I think his contract is running down stew and he aint signing another which will force their hand. Have you heard the joke that I don't find mildly funny? "David Moyes spent 10 years trying to get Everton above Man Utd. He finally succeeded". If I don't laugh I will cry.
