As is Coentrao, who is 4 years younger, with more high level experience, regular in the CL for R.Madrid and 41 caps for a good Portugal side and most likely cheaper. Baines at 29 has 21 caps, mostly friendlies and has never played CL Football. Anyway, we have enough ex-Everton personnel as it is.

When we bought RVP for instance there was no concern about his age on here! Yes there was. Lots in fact. I was being sarcastic!!

Also, we've targeted and signed players who've never had a sniff of Champions League football in the past. I find your 'we have enough ex-Everton personnel as it is' comment strange because Baines was on our radar well before Moyes, Phil Nev and Fellaini even came on board. We scout players at least a year before we sign them, also we would have more than a passing interest in a number of players from the same club, Everton aren't unique.

Baines will be almost twice the price of Contraeo. I can't see us getting Baines for anything less than 18 mill. We should get Contraeo in loan for six months with a buy option of around 10. Think that was mentioned before thd deal went tits up.

They're not stupid, they'll know what we're willing to pay for Baines so it gives them all the licence they need to raise Contraeo's price. Southampton would do it with Shaw believe me.

Circus club Madrid are not stupid is news to me.. When they want a player rid, they don't give a flying fuck about getting fair value..
Citing RVP to champion Baines is flawed argument imo. We were well stocked in striking department and signed Kags aswell. RVP seemed a luxury buy whereas LB needs sorting out long term. DM does not rate Fabio, Buttner won't be good enough and as with any potential, Blackett may or may not make grade. 2-3 quality yrs and then we will have the exact situation down the line. Shaw represents best investment, then Coentrao.

There is nothing to suggest that Shaw can handle the pressures of the bigger stage, nothing to suggest that he wouldn't either, but Coentrao; as has been said, is proven at the top level. Been through a title race, the final stages of the CL, and the scrutiny that comes with being at a top club. Also has shown that he doesn't mind being rotated which is a massive bonus for a player of his caliber, as well as the added bonus of being able to play a variety of positions.

It would be fantastic if we had a 22 year old full back that will be with us 10 years. I don't think football is like this anymore. Just my opinion of course but If I thought we would get 3 top seasons out of Baines then 10 mill is a fair price I would have thought.

They turned down 16 in the summer. That price isn't going down.

The cost is prohibitive and who knows how much we did have to spunk to find a long term replacement for Baines in 3 yrs time. Quality LB's are a rare commodity and when there are a few realistic options to serve us, say potentially 5+, makes financial and footballing sense to sign them instead.
