Perhaps they realised his contract is running down and he's 29 in December so that's the most they'll ever get for him.

No, we have 3 left backs currently that can play and then ontop of that, he's 29 At 29 Baines has at least 3 great years ahead of him. I think we need players that can play in the here and now. I think he is the best left back in world football so personally I will be delighted if we sign him.

Shaw or Coentrao are both younger and top quality. Shaw will be England's number one left-back for a decade at least once he breaks.

Problem is that we're going to get quoted barmy money, especially for Shaw and Southampton will feel that they're now in a position to play hardball in relation to their League position. January-wise Baines is probably the more gettable, he's already made noises about joining us, also as has been said Everton are deffo likely to sell. I'd prefer Shaw personally but that kid may be out of reach.

No, we have 3 left backs currently that can play and then ontop of that, he's 29 plus we could do better and go for Shaw or Coentrao. 15-16 mil is too much for Baines and its also a too familiar player for Moyes and from Everton. I'd be really sad that we seem to go back to Everton and not go for top talents. I don't like this, we are passing up on emerging talent ( Shaw) , Youth prospects ( Fabio, Blackett) and Experienced International Players( Conterao) for Baines. Familiarity can breed Complacency. If we need to make Everton richer ,at least get Barkley

I find it amusing how this forum regularly brings up our past 'value' comments from Fergie in a derisory way, yet in a situation like this, a fair amount of people are talking about value. He easily immediately improve us, slightly defensively and much more attacking, yet the main focus is on his age or price (that said Evra did provide a peach last match, but thats a rarity). Rather contradictory in my opinion.
Even though I don't think its that likely. Compared to Fellaini, he wasn't willing to push a move to us in summer. I find it strange that a player in his situation lacked willingness to not only spend his last few peaks years at top level, but also have the safety net of it also joining up with boss he'd worked with for most his career. Seemed strange to me.

Remember reports about him having confidences issues and low esteem issues or something like that - could probably explain why he didn't push his move thru. If its true all the more reason to look at other options than at Baines. He will improve and his great with his abilities and assists and does excellent work up and down the field but again we'd be looking at replacements in 18 months to 2 years time + his XP at CL is another issue.
IMO DM has enough in his plate to work with doesn't need to add another better option would be to go with Coentrao or with Talent and Potential in Shaw.

Contraeo is now back out of favour for Madrid. He's the one is go for, can play in 3 positions well . And he cried when his move to Utd fell through at the last minute.
A top class international cried when he found out he wasn't coming here. That counts for something IMO.

Bawled his eyes out I read. Ronaldo and Nani were with him and had to try and calm him down. He was distrught, apparently.
I'm with stew, that matters. Get him in.

Question: Is Coentrao good defensively? I have not seen him apart from WC and Euros to make an informed judgement.

Shaw or Contraeo , cant stand the fact we spent so much on the plodding Fellaini , would have liked Baines a year or two ago but not now.
