Fletch, also as regards the French been spoken, a lot of countries either speak it or have it as a second language, or are familar with it.
Hence they use it, another factor.

Yeh but thats not a valid reason. There are far, far more speakers of other languages such as Mandarin or Spanish. Just the French being typically pretentious.

Can you really expect two announcements at the Olympics to be in English and Madarin?? The announcements in English and French have always been the case at the Olympics and at other events, even the Commonwealth Games. French is being used by a sizeable amount of countries, and being effectively a second language for others. It's a factor, doesn't make it invalid. Personal opinion on it is different.

Why not do English Fench Mandarin and Spanish then? Or just drop the French then, you'll still be communicating with over half the world rather than the few hundred million that speak French. You see, my point is it really isn't to do with numbers. Its done that way because, its done that way, it seems. How about we do it in Greek to, they fucking invented it. Anyway its not a big deal, as I said it the French being their typical pretentious. Which they are Just annoying having it interupt the flow imo, that is all.

Enjoyed the opening ceremony, especially the Abide With Me and the Torch. Cavendish unfortunately hasn't been successful.

I never watch teh opening ceremony but is it really as bad as what other countries are saying? I got the impression most thought the ceremony was good but that some parts of it were not understood - those relating to British history and identity such as the NHS. Apparently many Americans confused Brunel as Abraham Lincoln (the film on how America kick-started the Industrial Revolution is currently in pre-production) and couldn't understand why we would dedicate so much to one of the things we are so proud of and rightly so - the NHS.

Hope the fans behind the goals and near the corner flags have got something to shield them from Hulk's shots.

Aye. People who are not exposed to British history, culture or modern British livelihood will definitely find many parts weird or consider the ceremony poor. Heard from a few people halfway across the globe back in Asia they had no idea what was going on - some bewildered at the Industrial revolution part or at the dancing montage. Many just think Britain is a country full of Gentlemen and Ladies, Oxford, Cambridge Universities. Big Ben and the countryside. Funnily, most people whom I spoke with, understood the concept of NHS (and the Welfare system) though. Hence I thought even though the ceremony was beautifully British and warm, it might serve as a bewildering culture shock to some / people overseas.

Did anybody else think Frankie Boyle went a bit too far in what he was saying about Rebecca Adlington's appearance?
I know what he's like from Mock the Week and his general comedy act, but when i saw that i did genuinely cringe. I did think it was out of order.
I'm sure most of us like a laugh but if there's one thing i think you shouldn't do it's something like that as it's actually disrespectful to the person in question. It's effectively bullying people at their expense. When you think of the mental health issues that some people can have, i think you have to be careful in this day and age.
My mate said to me that Frankie Boyle scored an own goal with that one, as you wouldn't consider Mr. Boyle an oil painting himself!
