Yes he is absolutely what we need. If it was possible I'd show you a video of his game against Spain in the Euros. I said it at the time, before we were in for him, that it was the best midfield performance i'd seen against that Spainish midfield in years. We have, in my opinion, 3 central midfielders on the books in Cleverely, Scholes and Carrick that can be relied on to start big games. Scholes is 35(?) Clevs has a question mark over his injuries. What happens if Carrick goes down? Giggs should be limited to cameos and games against poor opposition. Petrucci and Tunniclife are rookies and there is no gurantees. Anderson will probably be shipped out due to his inability to complete a season without serious injury. Do we want to see Rafael in midfield again? Did anyone enjoy seeing Park get treated like a rag doll by Toure? This guy is a fantastic, genuine modern day central midfielder. Not someone we can shoehorn in, not someone that will do a job. If we get him and Kagawa then it'll be close to a perfect summer for Utd.
He is exactly what we need.

Moutinho operates best behind the fowards ie in Rooney, Kagawa and Powells best position and hopefully in time Petruccis(though he has been operating deeper since his return to the reserves) I dont see Moutinho as a CM at all.
Martinez is a classy player with a great passing range but is quite slow, would he suit PL or more importantly MUFC Football, Bilboa moved him to CB because they have a very dynamic midfield, isnt that what we want?
I think we need someone who can get about and do both jobs a CM should do, an all rounder, someone who will put energy into our midfield again.SAF knows this is what we need, I think that is why he tried to convert Ando into that box to box player that we have needed since Keane, discounting Hargreaves brilliant though brief appearances.

You're wrong Areba. Moutinho has always been a central midfielder. Even at Sporting and Porto. Always a central midfielder. He would be fantastic with Carrick.
Carrick----Moutinho ----Kagawa------
Is Good.

In 2006–07, following the departure of veteran Ricardo Sá Pinto, Moutinho was made vice-captain at just 19 years of age. The following season, after Custódio and Ricardo also left, he would be named captain, the second youngest in the history of the club's professional football, behind Sporting's first captain and associate founder, Francisco Stromp. That season, with Leandro Romagnoli (an attacking midfielder) also in the starting eleven, Moutinho, more often than not, moved from his natural "behind-the-forwards" midfield role to the right flank, where he still managed to deliver impressive performances. During this season, he further established himself as somewhat of a club symbol, earning plaudits as one of the league's top players, with impressive regular and quality performances. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo%C3%A3o_MoutinhoIm not, ACM is his natural position but he is also a bit of an all rounder, though that is in the Portuguese Super League which is no where near the same level as the PL.

he is an atttacking mid but has the ability to get around like modric. i am in no doubt doubting this guy my point is surely he is not the priority in the middle. if carrick gets injured we really have no one that specialises in what he does in protecting the back 4. moutunho cant, scholes cant and cleverly cant do it the way carrick does. as i said the option for me to justisfy this move is jones will be deployed as a center mid and rotate with carrick depending on the oppostion. jones needs to either play rightback and center back as the transition is not gonna be so hard but he should not do them and center mid when needed its too much and i think will hinder his game long term.

Wikipedia is always 100% correct. Everytime I've seen Moutinho play in the last 5-or so years, he has been in the 'tradtional' central midfielder position. So just beyond the halfway line.

I agree redcase, his primary position throughout his career has been a CM, I dare say he has played both DM and ACM at times but for the majority, he's played as a traditional CM.

Im not just going off Wiki, just using it as a source.I have seen him play, we were linked with him quite a lot when he was emerging at Sporting and he then played ACM, Im not suggesting he cannot play anywhere else, Scholesy used to be a striker but my point was valid.

cant understand this clamour to attack attack and negate defense, even spain have 2 technically gifted defensive midfielders who can pass like acrrick, surely we need another carrick type before getting another attck minded player
