Yes I'm thinking the same, if indeed the contract talk is correct, Spurs should logically be interested in him. Reports seem to say they're after M'Vila though which is odd. Not that Spurs can go toe-to-toe with us if we really fancied it. But Fergie just doesn't seem to 'fancy' midfielders

I'd love to sign this lad. Would be perfect for us.
I'm happy with our business this summer and we have a great squad already, but Dembele would be the icing on the cake. I don't see it happening though. Not a disaster if it doesn't but would be nice.

Maybe when the Giggs tinted specs come off next year he will fancy one. I was a nervous wreck sitting through them first 2 games, a steely, take-no-shit midfield powerhouse would do well to settle me down. I have faith in Clevs but I can't help it.

Well that is neither Dembele nor what we need. Dembele can make a tackle but you're describing an enforcer, which he isn't.

Cleverley is very good and should blossom into a fine player. But he's not exactly built to be a powerhouse of our midfield, unlike others have sugessted, he's not Carrick future replacements but Scholes imo. Ando and Cleverley in tandem give us an awesome attacking platform but questionable defensive ability. Now the crux is, when they start to tire can we please have the depth to bring on a fresh, big strong powerhouse player to muck in and give the opposition something else to think about. City use Toure to great effect last season by shifting him further forward near the end of games to provide a bit more of a battering ram than technical ability up front. I don't mean for us to do the same thing, but that depth to have a sub that will really do something different would be nice. Giggs doesn't offer that, in fact unless he's on form he'll offer us cheap ways to lose the ball.

In Giggs' defence, he gives the ball away more than our other midfielders because he clearly has instructions to go for the killer ball wherever possible rather than play it simple.

No, I can forgive the passes that end up near misses or good idea's but he has a habit of giving the ball away cheaply. Fulham he pulled it off to, we want to control the game he comes on and plants a cross that nearly ends up for a throw at the half way line. For me he just very rarely hits the right balance of when to play smart and when to try and force things, which highlights the fact his career hasn't been central midfield. Sure he can conjure up a moment of magic and has done many times but that's not my point. Anyway dont want to turn this into a Giggsy thread.

Robson, Keane, Ince. These are the type of player we desperately need but I wouldn't say they were enforcers. Just iron-willed winners, who wouldn't accept being bullied or being beaten. Which happens to be exactly what we need.

The game has changed a lot since then. A player like Ince or Keane isn't as important as back then. Who would you say is like that in the Spain or Barca squad? Nobody. Yet they're the best teams on the planet. Obviously it's slightly different in England as there are some more physical sides, but I still say the most important qualities in midfielders now are mobility, technical ability, passing, vision and composure. It's a nice idea having a strong midfielder who "doesn't take any shit", and it can help in certain games, but it's a little old fashioned to talk like those are the most important qualities in a player.
We have tons of winners in the squad, if they weren't winners they wouldn't be at United. Are you telling me Michael Carrick isn't a winner when he's won 4 league titles and been in 3 Champions League finals, winning 1? He's a winner alright. Just because he doesn't run around getting in opponent's faces and screaming at his own team mates doesn't mean he isn't a winner.
Dembele would be a great addition though. He seems fairly good at making tackles but has a lot more to his game than just the defensive side. He seems to have the key qualities I mentioned.

Plus I'm not sure quite how well a Keane character would get on these days, where any hint of maliciousness would get harshly punished. And he was a malicious cunt. I know Bestie champions Tunnicliffe, but we need more than iron balls and a nasty side, especially when he hasn't really shown a United level of technical ability. The best example of that in the current game is Cattermole and even his boss has bitched and whined about the amount of times he gets sent off.
Like Tommy said a dying breed from different era. Obviously though it would just be nice to have someone a bit taller, stronger and more powerful than Scholes/Cleverley/Ando to give us that depth. when they get brushed off by a Fellaini or a Toure, it aint because of their attitude or will to win. Its more to do with the 5 inch height difference and a couple of stone of muscle.

According to EPLIndex, Dembele's stats compared to our midfielders last season:

Yeah, I think he's come on quite a bit though, in terms of the national team too. Maybe a case of a great player in an average team, could do a job when we need a bit of muscle in midfield whilst not resorting to a De Jong-esque cruncher.
Apparently he has a 15 mil release clause?

Yeah I've just read that, overpriced if you ask me. In fairness to him I haven't seen much of him but I don't think we should be spending that amount of money on a player that looks like he does the same job Carrick does for us.
