Spurs are bookies favourite currently at 1/2. Next is Man Utd, between 7/2 and 4

And 3. Smalling is better than Evans.

two problems with this, one is that you've dropped out carrick, two is that jones is a center half. 1. I'm not saying that's our starting XI every week, but where I would put Jones if we were to play him in midfield. 2. Jones will be a centre back one day, but he's too raw and naive at the moment. It's easy to spot when he plays there as he gets caught out of position far to often for a centre half to get away with. As I've said before, cnetre back is a position where players just simply don't become top class until their late-mid 20s, as it requires experience. The other thing is that he is too strong on the run and has a better engine than we need in our centre backs, why waste his talent? With the abilities he has, central midfield for the first half of his career before moving into the heart of defence is perfect for him. He can learn the game from the most important place on the pitch. That will make him an even better centre back when the time comes. And 3. Smalling is better than Evans. 3. Common misconception that, but Evans is our best young centre half. Jones is very, very raw, and Smalling doesn't have the experience Jonny has. With Rio's fitness not being guarenteed, Evans -- Vidic should easily be our first choice pairing a lot of the time.

And 3. Smalling is better than Evans. No, no, no, no he is not. Evans/Smalling/Jones would be the pecking order for me (and SAF I'm guessing). Jonny has bags more experience, although I do feel comfortable with Smalling in there also. Jones has a lot to learn in terms of his distribution and rashness of his decisions. He will come good though, Bestie makes a good point about playing him in midfield where if he makes a mistake - there is a chance someone behind him will clear it up.

Oh, and apparently Spurs have agreed a £15m fee for Dembele.

Good buy for Spurs if it happens. They sure need him.
I would like him here but I can't claim to be too disappointed. We have a great squad at our disposal.

The one thing i agree with Jim is that all 3 in the mid field love going forward which could potentially leave our back four unprotected, Carrick protects them and distributes play from there, in which case Jones not only would need to probably get the ball when not in position but also be able to distribute it better and know the right pass - which i am hoping will come with time and experience.

Haha yep this is defo the Phil Jones thread now. I personally think Smalling is better than Evans but that's just my opinion. I understand that Evans has got the experience but Smalling is very very underrated but very rarely let's us down. We're so blessed in the centre back position, it's ridiculous. Injuries aside of course.

Me too. Smalling > Evans > Jones. Smalling is potentially England's best center back.

Oh, and apparently Spurs have agreed a £15m fee for Dembele. who? fuck him, this is the phil jones thread Funny I've been banging on about an extra bit of depth of physicality in midfield and for a couple of days seem to have completely forgotten about Jones. His smattering of midfield showings were all promising. Thinks he's back in training now so hopefully he'll be back shortly. Not convinced about the centre half thing though, he's had a few bad games there and only a couple of good. Simply put he's currently our 5th choice CB. Both Smalling and Evans have shown more than him there and have more experience. Young lad though and that could change, but in him last year I saw a bit of a rough diamond with a bag of potential. I wouldn't fancy nailing him into any role yet. Maybe we wont, maybe Fergie will keep him as a utility man.
