Be a major shame of course, but his health is more important that anything else, and if coming back and playing jeopardises that then he needs to retire and plan his future.
Hopefully go get his badges and come back in a coaching capacity.
If there is a silver lining here it's that if he and Scholes both retire then surely Fergie has to either spend on another centre mid, or at least take a chance with a Powell or Tunnicliffe and start giving them some game time.

Agreed. Considering what you've just mentioned something will have to give it seems, and both options are positive for United fans (most on here at least). Either A) Fergie replaces Scholes and Fletcher with an actual central midfield signing (whoever it is will get Messiah status as everyone's been shouting about it for almost 5 years) or B) The youngsters get a real shot (Fantastic, we'd all love to see Powelll, Petrucci, Tunners, Januzaj, Lingard etc get some real first team footy if they're ready, excluding Carling Cup games). The only shortcoming with B is that, these days, success is almost mandatory and the Glazers will need us to win pots in order to keep the revenue flowing so this makes A a tad more realistic. An outside chance, option C if you will, is that Ando sheds 10 kgs and turns into the player we paid €30 million for.

Is this confirmed or just a Wind Up. Nice Fella , would have loved for him to have had another run , at least in CL. Man Gutted if this is true.
But then his condition this was always on the cards wasn't it. A Shame really

It's understandable that the gaffer wouldn't be overjoyed about that.
At the same time it looks like Paddy's only giving his personal opinion on it, which he's entitled to do. It would be interesting to find out if a jurno asked him outright on Fletch, or Paddy just came out and said it (probably on MUTV).

I never really expected fletch to come back - certainly not as a regular first teamer anyway. This is the summer we HAVE to fix our midfield.

Steve Morgan from Daily Star Sunday had a very short article couple of days back without any solid info entitled " Darren Fletcher on verge of return", apparently by the end of October. Hopefully this is based on relevant sources.

Just on Fletch, he was over here in Ireland a few weeks ago for the Dublin v Mayo, All Ireland Gaelic football final at Croke Park. Think his family has connections with Mayo, he's pictured above outside Croke Park stadium in Dublin with the fans wearing a Mayo GAA shirt! (Back in September)
