Out for the season after an op to help aid his Ulcerative Colitis. Might be safe to assume he won't be back.

Very sad. I'm still not ruling out a return though. Who knows maybe this will cure it and next season he'll be back.
If not, it's a shame. He had a good few years left in him.

Him in a coaching role could be vital.

Sad news.
I'm tending to agree that we may have seen the last of Fletch.
Not what we want to hear, obviously. Wishing him the best.

Him in a coaching role could be vital. Absolutely. He gets what it is and takes to be a United player. Not many have that trait.

I am absolutely sadden by this news! He's one of my favourite players. Nonetheless, I hope his treatments will help control his condition on the long run - if it involves him retiring, then so be it. Nothing comes first before health and one's welfare. I hope the club will uphold their pledge and take care of one of their own. Would still like to see him around Old Trafford as part of the coaching staff. Hope he gets well soon!!

Shame because he battled so hard to come back from that illness. Hope he comes back even if its just for one farewell game. Shame because hes been a vital member of our squad over the last few years. If this is the end of his playing career then I hope he can take or be given a role behind the scenes as a coach.
Hope he gets well soon.

Him in a coaching role could be vital. Absolutely. He gets what it is and takes to be a United player. Not many have that trait. Exactly. Terrible news for Fletch, and I'm gutted for him Game-face: Getting Darren Fletcher into a prominent coaching role will be the beginning of another generation of coaches the Gaffer has produced with United. We've seen the likes of Brucie, Hughsie and Keano go manage elsewhere. Edwin coaches at Ajax. Let's build a core group of guys who have had their footballing education under the greatest manager to have ever lived and make them part of the furniture. Sir Alex has said he has, what? another two, possibly 3 years. I'd love to see us with a group of ex-players forming a strong block of coaching staff so the next guy, regardless of who it is, has the best reference points for maintaining stability possible.

Sad news about Fletch. Caught me by surprise this one. even if he cant play a propper 'competitive' match, i hope we see him in a testimonial in his honor.
as for his value to the club, it may well turn out as more effective behind the scenes, as Bestie, Tatty and others have mentioned. we know Giggs has his badges, him, Fletch and Ole (if he was to take over from SAF down the line) could provide a strong vein of tradition in the coaching/management department for the club in decades to come.
all the best to him and his family though. i hope he was smart with his finances over the years.

Sad news but not to surprised to see this. Had posted a while back about how he'd made his first 90 back in early October but seem to slip further from view the closer to Christmas so I was already worried. He was always going to be a very big long shot to return to first team duties.

i don't accept he's finished yet. we can't just rule him out with limited knowledge of what's going on.
if worst comes to the worst at least he came back, he pulled on the shirt a few times, he scored in front of the stret. but i hope there's more, very inspirational lad is daz.

A statement from the club read: "Darren Fletcher will be unavailable for the remainder of this season having undergone surgery."
The statement continued: "We wish to stress this was a planned procedure undertaken at the optimal time having achieved a period of sustained good general health, as illustrated by the fact that Darren has trained with the team regularly this season and been available for selection right up to the operation. Whilst it is frustrating for both Darren and the club that he won't be able to contribute further during this campaign, this decision has been taken with our full support in the best interests of his long-term health and we look forward to him returning next season with this problem firmly behind him.

i know you can't take this to the bank but l'm willing to put a bit of faith behind it.
