I'm going on a holiday to Mexico this year for a wedding and there is a golf course. I understand golf a bit but never really played it. Any advice for a newcomer? I don't wanna be Tiger but good enough to beat a few others who haven't really played.

Obvious stuff mate! Keep your knees bent and your swing as smooth as you can. Don't worry about hitting the ball as hard as possible.
Oh, and always look at the ball. Seems really condescending but it's waaay harder than you'd give a stationary ball credit for!

To be honest, save yourself a bit of money look up Golfing tips on Youtube then get yourself down to the driving range. Big bucket and just try to play your way into it. If you're not getting anywhere, then look at a couple of lessons if you can find somewhere with decent prices.

If you swing and miss, pick the ball up while nobody is watching and throw it. Driving ranges don't do much my experience has proved that, I've managed to hit a ball straight up, hit the corrugated roof above me and bounce behind me (all with a driver) My advice would be if you swing and miss, pick the ball up while nobody is watching and throw it.

Have a few drinks - and you will play better than Tiger.
Sounds like a nice getaway / wedding though - away from the coldness. Have fun!!

Or let all the lads play golf then stay around all the women and hope for a hole in one

I played once, in Adelaide. I was rubbish, it's pretty fun though to give it a go.
Played with a couple of mates, one mate, first time he's ever picked up a club, took his first ever drive, what, hole in one? No, nothing that special. Killed a magpie, smacked it straight on the bonce. Well, don't know if it died, but it went down and didn't get back up!
Newcastle boy too, nice bit of irony there.
