i put Pique. Not because he's the best defender on the list, but because he's the most gettable IMHO, and he already knows the club, so settling in should take less time. that and he is still class, he's just in a bad spell of form. I suspect him coming in would raise the levels of output of the other defenders as they would (should) rise to the challenge his arrival would signal. I'm glad you said that seeing as the guy isn't a good defender full stop. thats a bit harsh Bestie. you didnt rate him in the first years when he went back to Barca? or when he was with us?

Pique was decent and all, but the talk in his first couple of years at Barca that he was the best centre half in the world was just wrong. He was (still is) a very good footballing centre back, and Barca's style suited him perfectly. But you need more from a centre half and if you compare him to Vidic (as one example) there really is a world of difference.
If you're 3-0 up and coasting and wanted someone at the back to look classy on the ball and stroke passes about then you'd go Pique. But for any "We need to defend" type games Vidic would have got the nod every single time.
We need a nasty fucker at the back. Jones can be it but bloody injures himself everytime he tackles someone. We don't need someone neat and tidy on the ball who can start attacks from the back. McNair could be that man given games and time.
I want a centre half with a nose that's been broken about 15 times. I want a young Steve Bruce.

I did, in the beginning. Rated his potential highly, but he either didn't match it or he's got worse. I'm not sure which one it is, but in either case he's relatively gash now. Great at passing it out from the back, terrible at actually defending most of the time.

I've voted Varane as he seems to be more gettable if the media is to be believed.
I'd love Hummels but the chances of Dortmund selling in Jan when they're still in the Champs League is real slim.

Vlaar. He's feasible and knows Van Gaal. Put him in red, and I guarantee he'll step up to the honor.

Numerous sources stating he has lost his love for the game altogether having won every possible trophy at club and national level. Apparently poker piqued his interest so much that he could even go pro..

I'm amazed Varane is even on the list. Very realistic chance of winning the treble with RM and starting all the big games now.. If at all he leaves, rents likeliest destination. Jose made an exception and gave him a lot of chances for someone who was only 18 then..
All a moot point as I doubt he'd be moving anytime soon..

I don't know where the idea that Varane is up for sale comes from and, even then, do Chelsea really need more top central defenders?
Laporte if we're going down the expensive-youngster-potentially-world-class route.
I'd agree with the idea of getting Laporte and Rudiger, too.
Flog Evans and Smalling, keep Jones (CB, CDM, RB), Rojo (CB & LB) Blackett (CB) and McNair (CB) and we're sorted.

Mine? Howedes Shawcross and Garay in that order..
Shawcross in theory should slot in seamlessly with little to no bedding time.
My concern with Garay is how much adapting time from a shitty league.
Howedes is the best of the 3 and younger than Garay.. Making the step up from Bundesliga to PL should be fairly straight forward..

Sure, Shawcross or Garay would do, but if we're attempting to make a 10 year move and creating a settled back four for continued success we should perhaps look at getting top prospects.
