This is assuming that they can be signed. A tall order in some cases.
I just wonder where we feel the main deficiency lies.
Also, I know that I will miss someone out. Apologies in advance...
One vote each so you can't sit on the fence!!

Voted for A.N.Other, simply as I've never heard of him and I like those exotic types.
Seriously though, just a Centre back, any Centre back who can stay fit for more than 5 mins
Oh, a right back to push/replace Rafa if he can't stay fit either

Fair point...I vote Stroots (provided he is fit) as I think we need protection for the back four and some real drive in the team... I think we have enough (albeit young) talent at CB for them to do the business IF we can settle on a consistent lineup...

While I would love Strootman, or a player of that ilk, I believe an experienced (and healthy) defender would be more crucial to us finishing 4th in this league, we can get by quite easily with our current midfield options in my opinion.
Strootman etc would probably be cheaper in the summer too

I'd put Garay on there because there does seem to be something in the stories. He wants to leave Russia by all accounts.

I would love Strootman but I think right now a centre back and a right back are the biggest priority. A commanding, assured, experienced central defender to shore up the defence and pass on valuable experience to the youngsters and a right-back to provide competition for Rafael and to play when he inevitably gets injured or sent off.
I would sell Smalling but even with him sold and a new central defender bought it means the team still has the new defender and then Jones, Evans, Rojo, McNair and Blackett in the centre, which is too many really and will stifle the development of the two youngsters. I don't really rate Rojo as a central defender, I prefer him at left-back but I much prefer Shaw there.. but you can't exactly have a £16m defender as backup. Rather difficult conundrum really!
I suppose out of a centre back and a right-back I would have to go for the later. Rafael is injury prone and rash on the pitch, with the only backup being raw youngsters Janko and Varela, with 1 cup game between them. I would love to see more of Janko but it would be harsh to dump him straight in there as No.1 right-back.

I put other. I think Varane would be great and all, I just don't see it happeneing. Agree with some posters, Strootman would be great, but if we only buy one player, it needs to be a center half. On that note, I will continue to beat the Shawcross drum. Watched a replay of Stoke v. Tottenham yesterday and he is just a very good player. People mention he is not very fast, but he is one of those guys that never seems to get beat by speed. Immense in the air, great tackler, leader, and former United player, what else do you need?

i put Pique. Not because he's the best defender on the list, but because he's the most gettable IMHO, and he already knows the club, so settling in should take less time.
that and he is still class, he's just in a bad spell of form. I suspect him coming in would raise the levels of output of the other defenders as they would (should) rise to the challenge his arrival would signal.

Neven Subotic CB First team
Stroots CDM first team
Martin caceres RB backup/first team depending on Rafa
Klose ST backup just incase RVP and falcao don't make it through the winter
edit: oh you said 1 right?....

I'd like to see us go after Howedes. Excellent centre back, probably a better right back than Valencia, Smalling, or Jones, and can also cover at left back and defensive mid if needed. I've also read that he has a 14m buy out clause, which I doubt to be true, but if it is we should be snatching Schalke's hand off.

I'm glad you said that seeing as the guy isn't a good defender full stop.
