I called a staff member a tosser and got a month ban. I've probably called everyone outside of the staff members a cunt and got nothing. (love you chris ) I demand a lifetime ban!!

Yeah he bit on the grammar part straight away saying everyone should use correct grammar. Nevermind the fact that we have many people on the forum from differing levels of education, background and nationality. He also complained about my point about opinions, liking it to space travel. An astronauts opinion being more important than someone who looked at the sky or something along those lines. The difference being Bestie is not a former Man United player, nor a staff member at the club. In fact to my knowledge he isn't a former professional footballer. If there is anyone here with those credentials then they have absolutely more weight to their opinions than I have. I played football as a child. I had trials at pro teams. I definitely didn't take it seriously enough because I always wanted to be a wrestler. That and I probably wasnt good enough to begin with! I did however play for a club in Belfast, my school, and University. I've supported this club for 30 years. I've been to Old Trafford over 100 times. I have friends who are football journalists. My opinion still means the same as everyone else. I withdrew my comment as I didn't want to inflame anything, but fuck it. I've had enough. My remark about the equality of every opinion boils down to this. You are confusing the perfectly reasonable expectation of an equal opportunity to have opinions heard (read really, on a forum); that does not entitle people to having their opinions automatically be taken as equal with others. 'My opinion is just as relevant as his!!' is a nonsense. The weight of an opinion is down to the person/people receiving it. Personally, the more someone knows about a particular topic, the more I value their opinions on that topic. The apparent lack of knowledge on here is pathetic at times.

Fuck off, the thing that made this place great was the diversity of opinions, diversity of nationalities that all have a love for United. Not the bullshit, I go to games, I never miss a game on the tellybox so you're all inferior. Enlighten us with your apparent superior knowledge, or just ban the lot of us and wank yourselves silly. It'll be lonely, but you'll be right.

I don't dispute any of that. I don't think people should be allowed to brazenly insult staff to their face (with the possible caveat you suggested of the member of staff 'starting it'). But my question is whether insults to non-staff posters will be treated in the same way? And, if not, what is the reasoning for tolerating insults towards some people but not others? If you’re asking do staff get preferential treatment on here then perhaps I’m guilty of it, yes. In that I’d instantly clamp down on it as an Admin. I’d trust the mods to stay on top of other rows and deal with them. Thanks for this - I appreciate your honesty. I'm not looking to start a row or anything. I just think it's important that everyone here feels that they are fairly treated in these matters - I think anyone being overly aggressive/rude to anyone else deserves the same treatment regardless of who they were being rude to, with the possible exception of when they were attacked by the other person first. It may sound a bit formal or serious for what is essentially a bunch of lads having a chat about United, but I think we all have such a great thing here and all of us - both staff and regular members - have a duty of care towards it. This forum is so much better than the alternatives I've seen. RedCafe is terrible. r/reddevils is just a complete clusterfuck. This place is full of intelligent posters who we've all gotten to know, and for the most part we all respect one another. That's a brilliant thing and we all owe it to ourselves and others to not let things get out of hand when tensions understandably run high. I think everyone, myself included, is guilty to a degree of forgetting this.

I suppose one thing I would appreciate is a bit of clarity on the roles of mods and admins. Outside of moving posts and dealing with unruly members, I don't have much of a sense of what you guys do. What do the roles consist of? What're the main differences between mods and admins (other than the colour change!)? How are they selected? Do they have certain sections of the board that they deal with, or does everyone look after everything collectively?

Also, are people surprised that posters (admins, mods, regulars) value some people’s opinions over others? That personal choice comes into it?
Again, seeing as though a lot of this seems to have stemmed from me today- I try to remain neutral, as much as I can. (Apart from Perisic) today I didn’t because I completely disagreed with a posters opinion, which I considered, in this case, to be self-entitled nonsense. Maybe this is regrettable, I don’t know. But of course there are people on here who I have more time for than others. There are plenty I’m sure that think my opinion is crap by and large.

We weed out obvious wums, attempt to keep discussions on track. It’s collective.

Personally, the more someone knows about a particular topic, the more I value their opinions on that topic. The apparent lack of knowledge on here is pathetic at times. Perhaps educating instead of ridiculing is perhaps the best course of action here. It may be down to them simply being mistaken and not knowing the correct information. Are we not here to discuss things? I was gonna take myself away from here for a while because a lot of things have been bothering me but fuck it. The arguments on here most of the time are fucking pathetic and completely unnecessary. What people need to realise is opinions are going to vary and while they shouldn't be "automatically taken as equal" they shouldn't be automatically dismissed either. Its healthy to disagree and air views but its gotten beyond that for a while now. The forum rules should be aimed at EVERYONE and not specifically at members. I've been slated on here in the past with this "top red" bullshit and nothing has been said by mods/admin (not that I give a shit I'm just using it as an example). In terms of the rules there seems to be a divide at times where there's a "us and them" mentality on here...I could be wrong but thays how I've seen it at times. I respect everybody on here (even you Dek ) whether I agree with them or not and appriciate what the mods/admin do seeing as they do it in their free time but this shit needs to stop before this place suffers even more from it. We're all guilty of saying stuff out of turn or talking nonsense but come on guys this is all getting ridiculous. I talk as much shit as the next person probably even more but if you feel that strong against something then its simple...put your view across without causing a scene, send a message privately if you feel that strongly against it or simply scroll past and ignore it. Love you all x

I guess it's just - if I have a better idea of what the staff do and their roles, then it's easier to see when it's appropriate for them to wade in, or to not do so, and to just generally get a better understanding of why things happen the way they do. Again, I appreciate the response.

Again, I appreciate the response. The easiest way I can describe it is this- In football, there are clear differences between certain uses of say swear words. A ref needs to use their discretion, to know when things are ok to let go and when they need to step in. A player might say ‘For fuck sake ref’ and it can pass. But if they say ‘Fuck off ref’ they get done. We need to use our discretion to judge when things are a bit heated and when things become genuinely insulting. And no, there are no clear guidelines to that before you ask.

Of course, personal choice is a right and is always going to prove a factor in people's opinions, I respect that, without it the forum would be pointless. I'm under no illusion some people dont like or agree with stuff I post, that's their right. What I'm trying to get across is even if other opinions are valued more its the way they are criticised or devalued at times Its all leaving a sour taste in this place which is the last thing I want to see.

Cards on the table. I don't want this to end, none of you do.
There's a lack of respect going in each and every direction, from us to you, and vice-versa. That to a lot of us though is the issue, It's two separate groups.
Mods/admin back each other up (Jay/carbon are largely impartial, fair play) and the rest of us do the same
Too much sniping, almost just for something to say and I'm as guilty as anyone for that. Don't be a dick and people won't be dicks. We all love this gaff, let's not ruin it.
