Jones ffs I give up, I thought we were finally getting to grips with this shit..obviously NOT.
Can we assume Ole has been offered the job if he`s doing the signing extensions?

Jones has always given 100%, and it's not his fault that he's made of glass. I like him, and wish the best for him.
But him staying on, long enough to get a testimonial, is a perfect illustration of this club's paucity of ambition.

Jones signing a new deal for 4/5 years doesn't mean he will be here that long. I really don't have an issue with him signing, if he is a back up then great, if he gets sold in the summer then better. reality is we will not have 4 world class center backs, lindelof is the number one at present we hope to but a partner for him but who knows bailly might kick in in a major way and sort that out.

What will happen is the exact same thing as Rojo. We will be giving him too high wages, no one will want him, and our idiot CEO's attempt to make money by selling him rather than letting him go for free will backfire when no one actually wants to buy him, meaning we are stuck paying him high wages for four years or sell him at such a low price we may as well have let him go for free. I wouldn't have minded if it was one year with an option for a second, like Young, to keep him around whilst the defence goes through some changes (new CB, Dalot coming to the fore etc.). But 2023 is just ridiculous.

But 2023 is just ridiculous. I think we need to be realistic. I get what you are saying but he is 27 and as far as any club would be concerned not just us he would be deemed an asset. when fit he can do a good back up job, not sure what his wages to be fair so you have a point there. with Rojo his wages aren't the issue it's the fact he doesn't ever want to leave. darmian will likely be off this summer same as Valencia and rojo. there will be at least one fullback coming in and I think it's safe to say a cb, reality is smalling or jones one will be sold, my bet being smalling.

People would complain if we let Jones go for free. People are complaining we've signed a more than adequate centre half for a few more years, and will likely be happy to cover.
Smalling getting re-upped was worse.

Smalling getting re-upped was worse. Biggest upside to Jones getting an extension is that it might result in Smalling being offloaded first.

If anything he can always be on call to assist any of the physios in an emergency. Hes put in enough hours to be double qualified by now.

Smalling getting re-upped was worse. I wouldn’t. If I had money to burn I’d pay him to leave! Just one in a long line of reasons we are where we are. Smalling played in the EL final. Jones would have found some way to fuck up. 150 + games since 2011. Glazer value in the market!

Smalling getting re-upped was worse. I've got absolutely no problems with Jones and Rojo going for free, so long as we bring in a top-class CB - which we should be doing anyway. Even on a personal level it's just rubbish. Why not let Jones go and play football, which is presumably what he wants, as recognition of his years of service? Signing him on with the clear intention of still letting him go for a higher price (which won't happen), or letting him rot as 4th/5th choice CB, is poor form. We shouldn't be signing him up and playing him lots, but nor should we sign him up and never play him.

Jones on his best day is much better than Smalling but we haven’t seen his best day in quite some time. Maybe moving him to defensive midfield would be better for him long term. As mentioned here by a few, he looked quite good in that role. Maybe he could rediscover his form with Phelan back.
