Jones on his best day is much better than Smalling but we haven’t seen his best day in quite some time. Maybe moving him to defensive midfield would be better for him long term. As mentioned here by a few, he looked quite good in that role. Maybe he could rediscover his form with Phelan back. Or we could just leave him on the bench to get the message? |

OGS and Co have their work cut out for them now. Jones and Smalling and Rojo as back ups will test even the greatest managerial team.
This only works if the midfield wins the possession game. We have seen what these 3 can do when having to defend deep ... calamity.

Jesus Christ. Another 5 years of waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat due to Phil Jones still playing at the greatest football club in the world. A total liability and always will be. He should have been sent back to Blackburn years ago.

I’ll freak out if we don’t sign a CB in the summer. Until then, Jones is fine as cover. He’s nowhere near as bad as is being made out and hopefully will only be needed occasionally next season.

Wow, people really need to lose their shit over stuff eh? I’ll freak out if we don’t sign a CB in the summer. Until then, Jones is fine as cover. He’s nowhere near as bad as is being made out and hopefully will only be needed occasionally next season. My prime concern with Jones has always been how fragile he is. When fit and not playing in Wembley he's a decent option to have, especially as a backup player. Assuming we sell/release Rojo this summer, we have 4 senior CBs and we (hopefully) intend on signing one additional world-class CB this summer, are we really going to rotate 4 players on one spot? This seems like quite poor squad management. |
