The league is and should always be a club’s barometer for success. Winning cups is nice and if he’d done it alongside solid league campaigns, whilst visibly stamping his mark on the team then he’d still be in a job. There’s only so long you’re going to get away with having the scouse put 7 past you and looking completely dysfunctional by saying “but the 2 cups”. Truth is, in the last 18 months we’ve looked as bad as at any point post-Fergie and are a team that does absolutely nothing well. Some joke at the prospect of relegation but we really do play like a side in the bottom half of the table and that’s being kind. Change had to happen. Like I said before, I am about 90% sure Guardiola secretly cuts himself thinking about that final he lost to ten Hag.

Take out the first several months of Erik's time here (which with the benefit of hindsight can be written off as a new manager bounce and owed a lot to Casemiro and Rashford being world class for about that amount of time) and it has been utterly abysmal under Erik.
8th in the Premier League. Bottom of a pretty rubbish Champions League group. Winless in the Europa League this season. Worst ever start to the Premier League this season. Even in the FA Cup the Liverpool game could have gone either way. The Coventry game was incredibly embarrassing and we needed a penalty shootout to win it. And the win over City while impressive was helped by having nothing left to play with so Erik could use the last few games of the season as dress rehearsals for the tactical plan he'd come up with and City were probably expecting a walkover so we took them by surprise.
But probably his most impressive feat was the total mess he made of rebuilding a squad after we managed to either sell or release a lot of LVG and Jose's signings.

True but the next manager is going to have to shift most of his shit.

Message was literally "Dear fans"....I am sure that Erik has said his private goodbyes to players and isn't holding a grudge even though he can feel let down by some of them.
He's a classy guy. He always tried to take the pressure off the players and never singled out players publicly. He also showed a lot of dignity and professionalism even as INEOS refused to give him any public backing and have been constantly talking to other managers behind his back.
Unfortunately the job was just too big for him and I suspect he lacks the charisma and personality needed to awake a slumbering giant like us. He was also way out of his depth when it came to recruitment and was incapable of assembling a team that could play the way he wanted.
I am sure in his next job when he finds his level we will see a different kind of football from Erik and he will restore his reputation in the game.
But the results and performances were dire for us so he had to go.
