For the two hours or so of the QF he was captain we conceded 5 goals. Against a team bottom half of La Liga. And the team looked about as motivated as fast food service employees.
I get that Erik engages in double speak with the media and he only fields Maguire as a last resort. But it is still hard to hear this coming out of his mouth.

I know we can’t compare everyone to Fergie but he is our clubs high water mark. There is no reality where he would ever talk about training never mind defending a player who is quite clearly not for this level. |

I just find it bewildering. Erik clearly doesn't rate Maguire as he's our 4th or 5th choice centre back this season. So why let him retain the captaincy and continue defending him to the press.
It isn't as if Maguire is a club legend who has won lots of trophies for us. We had one of those and Erik couldn't bring himself to say anything more than lukewarm praise about him to the press.
In fact while Maguire was captain we've been knocked out of multiple semi-finals and lost a final. And the one trophy he did win he was on the pitch for a few minutes at the end when the game was already won.
What other club in the world has a captain who never gets a game and when he does is usually the worst player on the pitch by some distance?
Some people on here were saying "Oh it doesn't matter if he's captain so long as he doesn't play". Well thanks to injuries he will probably be playing most of our remaining games as captain.
