So we paid benfica 15m to develop him. Still a circus 11 million. Which will be peanuts if he comes in and solves a real problem position for us.

Worth the money really. I don't think Erik has done a great job developing young players even though it is supposed to be a forte of his.
I certainly wouldn't bring him back in January. He'd end up having to firefight and try to cover for all his teammates and this season we've seen how that can make even good defenders like De Ligt and Martinez look bad. At least at Benfica he is benefiting from being in a settled and well organized team where he can focus on honing his craft and is growing in confidence and maturity.

20m for me is a no brainer in Jan, let's be honest Shaw will be injured again and malacia isn't really that great anyway, if we wait for the summer there is more chance he turns us down and the likes of real or Barca come in for him.

Initially looked at this and thought, "typical United, what a circus" - then I realized the previous regime would likely have sold him for < 1m sans any buy-back clause. Sounds a reasonable fee overall, but I'm not going to pretend I've watched a single minute of his time at Benfica. Seems to have rebranded to Carreras in the meantime, or since leaving Utd.

2 seasons now effectively without a fit left back and this Fernandez/Benfica stuff, just shows what a circus it's been!
Anyone else watching Tuchel at the England presser, get the horrible thought that if they fire ETH, it will be Southgate?

Southgate's already said he wants a year off, so if he was a candidate (which I honestly don't think has ever been the case) then ETH will stay for the rest of this season at least, unless they were to do a Rangnick again (which seems totally unlikely).

I hear you, but ask myself a year off from what? An overpaid part time job, basically picking a team mostly against minnows and speaking to the press a for a tournament. The guy stinks of mediocrity, self promotion and PR.

He has a family and it probably puts a lot of stress on them when your dad/husband is getting hammered nonstop by loads of gammons online for not picking “insert English player from the team you support* in his latest squad.

"From Preston, then go to La Liga, go to Portugal [with Benfica], every time stepping up to a higher club and a better league. Now we have to see and assess the situation if he can be an option for us. But playing at Man United is not so easy, playing in the Premier League for Manchester United is not so easy. You need experience, also development. You get development from playing for better clubs and in better leagues.” ERIK
Erik is a joke. I though the manager was supposed to develop young players rather than farm them out on loan and then sell them with buyback clauses?
Although Erik has a point that Benfica are a better club than us so no surprise the move is working out well for the kid.
I'd rather keep him over there so he can continue to develop. But when both our natural left backs are always injured and Dalot and Martinez are so obviously uncomfortable at left back it seems like a no-brainer to bring the kid back next summer.

The next window is going to be tough again unless they can raise some good sales from some of these wastes. It's actually a real worry, because you have Antony, Mount, Casemiro, Eriksen, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw. All will be leaving or just not contributing. Then you have players like Zirkzee and Malacia who are unknown, but don't look great to me.
Midfield squad will need to be totally re vamped and we need at least 1 left back another CB at least 2 central mids of the highest quality and two top class forwards, a striker and a right winger.
I think it will take 3 windows to get us to the level of challenging for CL and PL. They can't just keep buying youngsters either

They should take back this kid at the end of the season as well as a no 1 left back. Alphonso Davies, Theo Hernandez level. If we are serious about playing this style with wide players and inverted full backs! Davies is leaving on a free so we should be aggressive and at least try to persuade him with sign ons etc and Theo Hernandez will be entering his last year at Inter unless he negotiates a contract extension before that. City spent nearly 80mm on Gvardiol and pay him 250k a week. There's opportunity there to be aggressive, but still end up with a world class LB and a young one for half what City paid for Gvardiol

I like Casemiro, think he will do better under someone else who knows better. Mason Mount i had high hopes, but he hardly stays fit.
