MADRID, June 27 (Reuters) - Manchester United and Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo has said he would like to play for Real Madrid and plans to talk about his future after the World Cup.
Ronaldo has aligned himself with a candidate for Real's presidential election on July 2, Juan Miguel Villar Mir, and although he has made no firm commitment to a move he said he would open negotiations if Villar Mir wins.
"I have told my agent I am prepared to leave. I want to do it in the best manner possible. I want to play for Real Madrid and dream of doing so," Ronaldo told the Spanish sports daily Marca on Tuesday.
"I have gone with Villar Mir's project because it is serious and follows correct procedures. They have explained to me their plans and the next step is they will talk to Manchester United to open negotiations.
"Other candidates wanted me to sign a document which is not legal. Villar Mir has promised me he will talk to the club and all we have done is talk through an agent."
Villar Mir's move to sign Ronaldo is similar to Florentino Perez's election winning gambit that helped him to the presidency in 2000, when he said he would sign Barcelona's Luis Figo if the members elected him.
This has been on sky sports also, seems to be truth in it, thoughts?
I for one would be extremely upset should he leave United.. would explain why we are linekd with plenty of wingers lately.

I heard a few stories at the latter end of the season that Madrid wanted to turn Ronaldo into the new Henry, winger turned striker and were trying to lure him into the election campaign. Ive seen quotes from Ronaldo taken out of context b4 when he said one day he would like to play in Spain but it didn't neccessarily mean within the next 5 years. He's signed a big contract with United the day Keane quit and therefore I don't think he's gonna be on his way just yet. Pre season speculation Id say, Can't claim Henry wants to join em as he has agreed to stay at Le Arse so Madrid are dropping in the name of the next best thing MADRID, June 27 (Reuters) - Manchester United and Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo has said he would like to play for Real Madrid and plans to talk about his future after the World Cup. True, and nothing will be done until their election campaign is done on Sunday, according to sky sports the man who claims to have an agreement with Ronaldo is the current favourite.. always amazes me how they promise to buy players without even consulting clubs whether they're available. Does seem to have some truth to it though, Sky don't report things otherwise, and neither do the Spanish press. Only trouble is it's typical of Madrid's politics. And similar to the Beckham saga.

it is a worrying article as direct quotes normally hold more say in these matters......
its strange because only before the world cup he said he wants to become a man utd legend and it seems like a complete change of heart.... and also marca is the spanish equvalent of the sun and its probably worse.... its like a real madrid fanzine....and you have to remember that half the paper is about football (they have many daily football papers they need to fill)...so more likelly to make things up on a slow news day

I hate to say this... but Reuters are a serious agency, they're hardly likely to randomly make up these things. I guess we can only hope that Mir doesn't get the chance to go after Ronaldo, although if this is easily he would leave United, is he ever going to develop from a good player to someone we cannot be without? Personally I think a player needs to have passion for a club to excell at it.

Ah the world's most frustrating footballer. I reckon more would have been made of it if it were true. I wouldn't like to lose him but yet I wouldn't lose any sleep if we did sell him.

From ManUtd.com:
United have played down reports linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a move to Real Madrid.
Spanish newspaper Marca carried quotes from the United winger claiming a deal would be done to take the 21-year-old to the Santiago Bernabeu if candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir is voted in at the club's presidential election.
But United insist: "He is our player and has signed a long-term contract until 2010. We will not be drawn further on this matter.”
