Sir Alex Ferguson kept a level head, claiming 'mass sackings and suicide' are out of the question, after his Manchester United side were humbled by Southend United.
The Scot was generous in his praise of the Championship side, who claimed a giant killing in the Carling Cup fourth round at Roots Hall.
Freddy Eastwood's first half free kick proved the difference between the teams, though Ferguson could feel rightly aggrieved after his side dominated the match for large periods.
Despite locking his team in the dressing room at the final whistle, Ferguson - who celebrated 20 years at Old Trafford just 24 hours previously - found much to admire in the plucky Shrimpers.
"I can take anything away from Southend because they are a good football side," Ferguson told Sky Sports 1.
"It is a great reminder to everyone at the club that football can smack you in the face.
"I have been here 20 years and I am not impervious to it either.
"In a way, it is great for me because I know tomorrow we can pull our togs on and start working again. There is no harm in defeat providing it improves you and you can learn from it.
"I am sure we will get slaughtered for this defeat, but there is no need for any knee-jerk reaction, no need for any mass sackings and there will be no suicides.
"Maybe a few of my players will be a little bit embarrassed because it is a disappointing result.
"We have lost three times this season now, all 1-0, so there is not much wrong with us.
"Our form in the league has been good and we will be ready to face Blackburn on Saturday." ----------

Wenger and Mourinho should read this to learn how to be gracious in defeat.

another embarassing cup defeat. don't really know what to say. manchester united, top of the premiership vs southend bottom of the championship. even with our reserves we should have won this comfortably. just goes to show our first team is awesome but our current reserves are awful.i mean cmon even charlton and newcastle who are absolute SHITE won(albeit on penalties but still). too bad that most of our capable reserves are out on loan like pique and bardsley. richardson, a lot of arrogance and little quality just like the last time. i used to think he was such a great prospect but his attitude is so shitty nowadays. after the scare at crewe, i thought our players would buck up and not underestimate lesser opposition. apparently not. well, i'm going to be positive and be of the opinion that playing in one less competition will increase our chances of success in the other 3. i can only hope now that we bounce back from this like we did after copenhagen and murder blackburn....and that chelsea, liverpool and arsenal all get kicked out as well.

what really makes me disturbed is how could the players granted i guess ronaldo did his best i guess, but how could they on the 20 years of SAF deliver such a bad peformance and get knocked out of a cup which we won so gracefully last season.. they must not been have very zealous about our campaign to defend this trophy

I was at a loss for words when I read the headlines this morning... Unfortunately TV in India doesn't consider the League Cup to be as important as the Premiership or the FA Cup, so we don't get coverage. But this is the most shocking defeat I can remember in recent times, especially after al the bruhaha about SAF's 20, fielding a full strength XI etc etc.
But I guess its over n done with now. I'd rather lose a game in the Carling Cup than in the league. The law of averages caught up with us and luckily it happened in this cup. I'm sure we're bouncing back with a vengeance against Blackburn so they better be wearing kevlar body suits !

The upsides are that we have less games to think about now. Plus, who gives a shit about the Worthless Cup anyway? ;D  yea, for me, it's all about the league, champions league 'n the FA cup !!

A cup is a cup, it's easy to lose a cup match, without it meaning it's an emberrasment. The thing is, all that matters in a cup match is how you perform on the day, and last night we didn't perform. That's the whole point of a cup though isn't it, that anyone can win them.

I'm not too upset about this......but it does highlight the lack of quality in the squad depth ( which is more upsetting ). Well done Southend, I'am looking forward to the Celtic match in the Champions League Followed by Chelsea in the Premiership !.

Firstly b4 I critisise our players I'll say well done Southend.
Thought Van Der Sar would have got to the free kick to be honest.
Heinze was terrible last night but I'll put that down to coming back from injury.
Pan Head was as poor, just doesn't look comfortable.
Sheasy was terrible, needs dropping for a few games, stick him in the Stiffs for a bit.
Smiths touch wasn't there again I'll put that down to injury, unlucky to be called for offside when he was clean through.
Rooney faded but with a poor performance from the midfield forwards are always up against it.
Richardson, will he ever step up and show us what he can do on a consistant basis?
Fletcher and Jones were made to look quite ordinary.
So full credit to Southend, we started at a slow pace and never really raised it.

F*ckin hell...only 3 to go for now....
Never mind - priority 4 has gone!
Worried about the strength in depth of the squad though!
