Not pleasant viewing; my wife was not impressed with my language! The likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, and Rio were not at the races, but you could blame the formation and lack of drive for that. Why do we play this shite 4-5-1 formation at home?! Fair play to Lyon to getting stuck in and giving us a game. Perhaps some of the players feel that it is our right to win these sort of games at OT, and therefore do not put the effort in? Anyway, a win is a win. It looks like an English and Spanish 1/4 Final line-up to me; how about beating Arse, Chavs, and Dippers en-route to lifting the CUP!?! I say bring em all #chainsaw#

First Half last night was class, our passing & movement was crisp and a delight to watch! Whereas the Second Half was entirely the opposite but we did change when Tevez came on! 4-5-1 Doesn't work for us against European teams! I agree to playing the system when we are away from home against teams such as Lyon, Milan, Roma, but at Home we should play 4-4-2, and teach teams a lesson! Fair enough we might loose a few goals but with the attacking players we have we will score more!
I too noticed the incident with Nani and Rio, who knows what that was about! But if Nani was given specific instructions by Fergie,CQ or other senior members and he didnt carry them out then he deserved a bollocking from Rio as he is the Captain! Its good to see Rio or other Senior Members of the Squad having a go at some of the younger members keeps them on their toes! But there wer a few others last night that needed a Ball Chewing, Ronaldo, Rooney two prime examples! But hey Ronaldo has an excuse he's been playing a blinder all season and as someone said maybe tiredness caught up on him! His passing in the second half was very very poor! Rooney had a bad one all together, but he too has an excuse in that playing him as lone striker and walting balls up to him is not guna get the job done!
Overall Glad wer through but around the 80th Minute i just kept thinking of Porto in 2004, how we controlled that match and the sneaky fuckers getting a goal in the final few minutes thought that would have been repeated last nite!
And another note, Benzema is awesome! If this fucker is costing 50 million or watever pay it for him cause in a few years this guy will be the star of world football no doubt! I don't think ive seen anyone get challenged by Rio, Vida and Wes at the same time and come out walking never mind with the ball!

Wasn't the best match but we didn’t give them any chances scored ourselves so all in all a good performance. We could have added to the lead if it wasn’t for some poor final balls.
Roll on the Quarters!

P.S What was it with all those idiots leaving early?? Loads started streaming past us in the last 10 minutes and near the end there was about 20% of the ground empty Part of me actually wanted Lyon to score and take it to extra time just so the ones that left would miss the rest of the match. The majority of our home support sadly is shite

not the greatest game by far. enough's been said about how much we all hate the 4-5-1 so i wont add to that. just happy to see us through and hopefully we can put on a better show in the next round. and yeah, i wanna know what rio was pissed off at nani about.

If 4-5-1 means midfield dominance and efficiency in controlling and keeping a lead intact - think again

For the life of me, I cannot understand why SAF (and Carlos) continue with this 4-5-1 formation; especially at OT! I am not convinced that Rooney suits the lone striker role; surely Saha is better suited? Rooney naturally plays off a front man, such as Saha. That formation seems to encourage teams to attack; certainly in the later stages. I was very nervous in the second half. I am no football management expert; although I did guide United to successive doubles/trebles on Football Manager 2007! However, it is clear from watching Utd and the comments on here and 606, that the 4-5-1 in its current guise is not a formation that works; unless of course dull, tepid, nervous 1-0 wins are the aim?!

4-5-1 does mean to swarm all over the midfield and dominate it! two things we didnt dominate the midfield in the Second half and we issolated the striker (Rooney)! Because of slack finishing on lyons behalf and good defending we would be out at the time of writing!

dont understand some of you how many clear chances lyon have? one post what I am sure vds will saved if it will go to the target how many wasted chances united had? boring game? how can a game of your club you support be boring? sorry i cant understand it
why 4-5-1?? watch the first half again, dominate possesion, great defensive and good attacking, it can switch to 4-3-2-1, 4-1-2-2-1 fletcher was good, everyone was good maybe little too much apce for them on wings but again lots of crosses ended in goal out
but rooney need a partner upfront

How can you not understand it??? Mate if its a Boring game, its a Boring game! Thats down to the tactics nothing to do with us fans! Last nights match especially in the second was BORING! And the vast majority of our European matches are boring, its not about excitement its getting the correct tactics, last night we got our tactics spot on in the first half! Second we didnt and we only came to life when went 4 in midfield and one up front! Yes Lyon had one maybe two decent chances but fuck thats all a team needs when the opposition is content on defending a one-nil lead!

4-5-1/4-3-3 Worked last season in Europe. We destroyed Roma in a big game at OT while entertaining, we beat Milan while Entertaining. It would have probably got us to the Final if it wasn’t for us losing 3 of our back 4 to injuries and playing the other while injured along with Ronaldo.
In the end we comfortably beat Lyon and were the better team over the two legs and if that means we don't entertain as much as usual but get the results in Europe i'm all for it.

Apart from the 3-2 win over Milan, the 7-1 against Roma, the 4-0 against Arsenal all against big teams in big games plus many more against the smaller teams

I think the players had a below par day yesterday, I don't think it was the formation.
We just refused to use the wings and went down the middle far too much, give the ball away too much and our passing wasn't as good as it has been.
Positives though, we beat a good Lyon side 1-0 despite having a shit day. Kept a clean sheet. Didn't need to start with Scholes, Hargreaves, Giggs, Saha or Tevez. We left them out and won, on Saturday we left Rooney, Giggs and Ronaldo out and won.
Our squad is coming into force and it's all about results come this time of the season - of course, the free flowing football will be back Saturday for the Cup game.
As for people leaving with about 10 mins to go, at a stage where if Lyon scored there'd be extra time was utterly stupid.
