Tommy,
I probably didn't explain myself properly...again. The jealousy didn't come from their 1-1 draw with a team we put 8 past, but more from the fact that they stuck to their attacking style in Europe and we ditched ours post haste. My head knows full well that winning in Europe takes the type of pragmatism we showed in Portugal, but the heart would love to attack attack attack and treat the rest of Europe like they're from north London.

It wasn't just about realising Europe requires a different style of play though. It was about giving players who haven't played much football a run out, both saving players for Sunday and improving the match fitness of other squad members. We are in an easy group, and a draw in by far the toughest game in the group on paper is a very decent result indeed, especially as we rested big players for Sunday.

Still not convinced Bale would be worth the fortune we'd no doubt have to pay, especially with the wingers we have at our disposal.
I know statistics don't tell the whole story and he would be more dangerous at a team with more top players to worry about for the opposition, but I don't think he's anywhere near consistant enough.

the wingers already at the club aren't an issue for me. it's about a player who should be in a united top, lets get him in. the wingers wouldn't be a huge problem IMO because
1.youngs versatility - could be rooneys understudy as the deep striker, especially if/when berba leaves, or play up top with wayne, or play on the right in some games.
2.bales the sort of player who would benefit from not being flogged all season long, a rest now and then would do him good.
3. i can see park being used less frequently
overall i don't think we'd have this huge problem of too many unhappy wingers if he joined.
the fee could be a problem as you say, but what with harry leaving for england something could happen.

If we were gonna spend silly money I'd rather offer it for a Goetze or Wilshere.

And I suppose Wilshere would never be sold/come to us so it's just Goetze.
I'd probably be excited if we actually bid for Bale of course.

If its silly money it has to be Modric surely. the man is made to play in this United system.

I think we should buy from abroad mainly, unless someone spectacular comes along like Jones. If you look at the fees City and Chelsea paid for Silva and Mata (admittedly with loads of wages most probably), paying £40m for Bale or Modric seems ridiculous.

There is part of me that wants to see Arsenal crash and burn just so we could be in with a proper chance for him. As Wenger said early summer, if Arsenal cant hold on to their best players they are no longer a top club... then sold Fabregas and Nasri. His head may turn if they do a 'Liverpool' and they don't have near as much money as they did. Cleverley plays a bit like Modric so I don't think are need for him is as great as we thought. Wilshere is like a more mobile version of Carrick, aka awesome.

ball winning mid would be nice. cleverly and anderson offer a solid attacking threat and with games this season will bet better

I decided while Norwich were chanting "YELLOW. YELLOW. YELLOW" yesterday that we should buy Bale purely so the Stretty can chant "BALE. BALE. BALE" over and over again.

my last argument on the topic of bale which is spilling into other threads:
this whole 'bale's too inconsistent' thing doesn't hold the water with me. what makes people think that he won't bring on his game at United? do we not have a history of buying good players and giving them the platform to become a great?
if the ability is there they'll find their A-game at this club. look at the critics assessment of ronaldo during his first season or two. one trick pony wasn't it? no end product, no consistency. blah blah
even if he aint destined to be a player who hits his high notes on a regular basis, he's proven that he's got explosive, match winning abillity on the big stage and on his worst day he's a a handful often requiring 2 or 3 to sort him out.
and without wanting to open a can of worms, Ryan Giggs was a somewhat inconsistent player during his days on the wing with his final ball and his finishing. whos complaining about him?

as much as i'd want Bale, cant help but think he'd be a needles signing. Center mid has to be the priority next summer both creative and defensively as far as im concerned.
