Fuck off Martinez. Moyes is gone, my good faith towards Martinez pointing out the flaws in the 'empty inheritance argument' is gone too. A good manager could get Cleverley up another level with the improved midfielders around him. Agree! Let him try under a proper manager with MOTIVATIONAL skills... not that DD was lacking any..

There is a very good article on our Blog with some poignant comments about Cleverly. Until THAT injury against the clog dancers he was progressing nicely. This last season he was at the receiving end of serious bitters type criticism. I wish to declare my hand in favour of keeping Cleverly and rebuilding his potential.
During the game away to Stoke he faced that well known double clogger Adams and didn't shy away as MF and Carrick did. He continued to battle away and got no thanks for it in a dismal display even by Moyes standards. We need Clevs to blossom this season. Ignore the jealous opposition fans who stirred a campaign against him. He is one of ours and deserves our support through thick and thin. He has the ability and the courage, but his confidence was almost destroyed by Moyes. Given the right circumstances he will do well for us.

He has the ability and the courage, but his confidence was almost destroyed by Moyes. Given the right circumstances he will do well for us. The thing that drove me mad about that Stoke game (and made me despair of some posters) was that Rooney dropped back allegedly to play centre mid alongside Cleverly and then proceeded to run about like a maniac, virtually never actually in the centre and left his partner horribly exposed. However all we heard was "Cleverly is shite, midfield was over-run etc) As you pointed out Phil, the reality was that at least he fought till the end even though he was facing 3 players for nearly half an hour. But that was conveniently left out by some. Wijnaldum, once he replaced the injured De Jong, had a decent World Cup for the dutch. He did nothing spectacular, kept things tidy, made his tackles and passed it on to Wes and Robben, the dangermen in the Dutch side. At no stage were the Dutch over-run in the middle and they were very good value for 3rd place. I'd never seen this guy play before. I think he's a converted winger. If LVG can get a solid, quietly effective performance out of him in that system, then there is genuine hope for Tom. I think he'll contribute in a similar fashion, win his tackles, screen his defence and pass to Mata and Herrera. He'll be a good squad player.

Agree with Stewart. LVG might see Clev as a Wijnaldum type player. Not a first team regular but when you need graft or in certain situations.

I agree that he has potential but, like Carrick has had to try and hold the midfield together on his own at times and has received all manner of slightly unfair stick for it. Honestly, he was on fire a few seasons ago until Mr. Davies introduced him to the ICU. He's seemed rather shell shocked since and hasn't been able to regain his confidence since. Like Stew pointed out above, having Wonderbollocks run riot hasn't helped, and neither did Moyes' tactical ineptitude.
I'd view Cleverley as a valuable squad player with the potential to challenge for a first team place.

19 games for Villa now.
Not a single goal or assist.
Now I know Villa are absolutely shite, but those stats are pathetic to say the least.

Borrowed time for Lambert IMO
Clev needs to put in a few performances or no one will want him

He was the only player in a dreadful Villa performance who seemed concentrated running from box to box. After the first goal he seemed to stabilise the middle after a lot of running. He was subbed but by then he was shagged and Villa was about to collapse, which was spectacular. Given the end of Fletcher and no new midfield in sight he might return in favour. I wouldn't get rid of him because of our investment and his potential. We have seen him play well, in a side with decent players he could still contribute.

He will go to Everton to play for Martinez.
Another example of a footballer surrounding himself with the wrong people/advisors. More interested in his "brand" than actually achieving something.
Januzaj could do with taking note of how Cleverley & Morrison's careers have gone......

It happens. Teams can't force players to do the business on the pitch. The celebrity cult, and riches, that come with the job now mean most dont even need to be semi-decent to become stupidly rich.
Why knuckle down and work hard - a la Keane, Neville, Scholes, Cantona, etc etc - when you will still pick up the same money every week.
Cleverley's advisors had him thinking he had "made it" and needed a "brand" before he done anything other than sign a bigger contract with us. Morrison's off-field antics are well known.
United can't force the players really. The only thing they could do would be Besties idea of incentive based contracts. But then thats no good if another club will just come along and offer them whatever they want. You just have to hope they have sound mates & good advisors around them, as well as that desire to actually want to be the best (Ronaldo is a good example of that) to point them in the right direction.

Taking Cleverley back into our squad would be a huge leap backwards for the club in my opinion. Nice lad and all that but sentiment goes out the window. He is nowhere near good enough to play at the level we are striving to reach once more. Not even as a squad player. Bottom line.

Yes absolutely. I remember that god awful TC23 website. Which came up a month after that one community shield game.
