I still think all roads lead to Southgate, he was never going to announce he was leaving before the euros, we as a club couldn't wait until it's finished as that would ruin any early transfers and planning for the season, Eth has a shit start in the first 10 games he's gone and Southgate comes in.

If I were Ineos I wouldn’t even be thinking about contract extensions until Christmas. If it goes tits up again and we are languishing in 8th place in November we can pull the trigger with not much compensation to shell out. He deserves another season, but contract talks need to be solely based on next season being a much better one. Top 4 being an absolute minimum. Given the teams in the Europa and the fact that no teams drop down from the CL we should be going far in that, if not winning it aswell. They need to be offering contracts when earned, not just dished out. We've done this far too many times in the past.

Weird this was all sorted as soon as he returned from his holiday

Happy with this outcome.
With a few good signings, a better injury situation and the changes in management at Liverpool, Chelsea and (perhaps?) Pep leaving City, United will be well placed for a strong 24/25 season.
Keen to see which academy player(s) break through under Ten Hag next year, too.
Ethan Wheatley and Harry Amass could be contenders, but perhaps too soon.

So why wait over 2 weeks to announce it ? Along with the reports that we spoke to alternatives .. All lies I suppose? 🧐 It's probably been done to shut the media up because every shite journo is pedalling more and more bullshit. Either way it's done. Think it's the right decision to keep him on. None of those linked fill me with any confidence that they're an upgrade. Wouldn't be doing anything until at least Christmas in terms of contracts though. We need to see what improvements are made first. We need to see a lot of things change and more importantly how much backing this new structure will give. The safety net has gone now, no more fuck ups. Glad it's all been announced anyway, now for what will hopefully be a much needed, big summer window. It wasn’t done now to stop journos. It was done as soon as Tuchel walked when he realised they wanted Southgate who wasn’t willing to commit.

Most journos have been throwing shit at the walls for the past week to see what sticks anyway. So glad its backfired on them. Either way I'm glad with the decision and neither of these have come in.

INEOS have far too much self-righteousness to care what the media think. If they did they would have shut the rumours down months ago by giving Erik public backing.
Their excuse is they've been doing a thorough end of season review and concluded Erik is the right man to lead us forward. That is BS. Erik already confirmed the end of season review was completed before he went on holiday. The reality is that it was between Tuchel and Southgate. Tuchel wasn't prepared to be strung along so knocked us back. Southgate refused to commit and we couldn't wait until end of July to open talks with no assurance he'd accept. And we know we have a lot of work to do this summer and its impossible to plan for next season without knowing who your manager is going to be and the uncertainty has been holding up our transfer business.
But I do not think it is over. Southgate will be waiting in the wings and if we get off to a bad start next season INEOS will have the perfect excuse to sack Erik and appoint Southgate justifying it by saying we gave Erik another chance

15 years ago Southgate managed in the PL ,with a 29 % win rate. How on earth do these spoofers think this spoofer is the man ?

Southgate even being linked with us really does show how far we've fallen.
Not that I think for a second he'd come in, but if he did I honestly think that would be me done. I love the club but I don't think I could get behind that at all.

It’s as if all these journalists didn’t have a clue. quite frankly no one did. Everyone getting emotional. They even said the guy was back from holidays when it appears he is still on holiday. None talk facts, all opinion pieces to get clicks.

Happy for Erik to be in charge for next season. Especially as the alternatives were poor. I’d have been equally as uninspired by Tuchel as by Southgate.
Have to say, I think it’s funny people claiming they’d be done with the club if Southgate was appointed. What’s the point in sitting through a decade of pure misery which included David Fucking Moyes following on from the greatest manager of all time, to then go “nah, I’m not doing this anymore” at the hiring of a manager we don’t like?
It’s just daft. You’d all still be watching every week and that’s fine. You’re United fans. You’ll probably never be done with the club.
Anyway, I still think Southgate is a decent bet to get the job at some point next season.

Big article about the whole saga in the Athletic today. Apparently the list of managers considered, or spoken to, include:
De Zerbi Pochettino Thomas Frank Marco Silva Ruben Amorim Roberto Martinez(!)
Suggests there was support in some quarters for Southgate (apparently for instigating a "culture change" at England) but that's about it.
(Also, I'd already forgotten Scholes floating the idea of McLaren as caretaker manager. Amazing stuff, Scholesy.)

I'm surprised we never actually went for poch, who out of that list would have been the only one I would have wanted, time to get behind him now but we need a huge clear out if we go into next season with the same squad pretty much then it's all absolutely pointless.

I'm fine with the decision.
But I really hope for ETH's sake and the team's sake that we start strong next season. Otherwise the atmosphere will turn poisonous very quickly.

Pochettino would have been my choice. Not sure why INEOS seemed keener on Tuchel who comes with a lot of baggage. But anyway I'm OK giving Erik the benefit of the doubt and seeing how he does in his 3rd season working under the INEOS structure.
Last season was dreadful aside from the FA Cup run. Some mitigating factors: defensive injuries, Casemiro and Rashford's shocking decline in form, Mainoo injured first half of the season, Mount injured pretty much all of the season, Hojlund finding his feet and Onana's difficult start.
My main concern with Erik is style of football. Transition football is risky and requires very good players to execute it effectively. But hopefully INEOS can steer him to a more possession based approach and bring in players suited to that style.
He also needs to stop putting faith in underperforming players and give other players a chance. Amrabat was underutilised last season and when it was clear Casemiro was finished should have been drafted in. It is criminal how little gametime Amad got with both Rashford and Antony disappointing all season. There need to be standards and if you don't perform you get dropped.
